.22LR Shotshell in a 10/22?

I was wondering if I could shoot CCI 22LR shotshells #12 shot 31 grain though my 10/22. On the back of the box it says that the ammo is "Not intended to cycle semi-automatic firearms." Will the gun jam if I use the ammo? Or will I just have to manually cycle the action?

Any help is appreciated,
Cain

It will shoot just fine. It just won't create enough pressure to cycle the bolt and eject the empty case. You will have to cycle the bolt manually for each shot. Same thing with the subsonic ammo.

Keep your distances to feet rather than yards also.

I've used them in my semi-auto 22s...... I chambered them by hand- they ejected just fine, as I recall. They are pretty worthless for anything bigger than a sparrow, and unlikely to hit even that beyond a few feet.

BB guns are more lethal on garden pests, in my experience, and there is less collateral damage.

Thanks for the answers. This really isnt related, but does the plastic jacket get ejected with the brass?

A stock 10/22 should have no problem extracting a standard crimped rat shot. Cycling is another matter, some will some won't. CCI rat shot with the little plastic tips are like fishing lures: their job is done as soon as they catch a buyer and they are over-priced accordingly. It is unlikely you will shoot enough of them to foul your barrel with the little plastic capsules. Rat shot is really not very good against rats/squirrels at more than five or six feet but at that range they are instant death to rattlesnakes. Maybe they should be renamed Snake Shot. If you're going to carry rounds in your pocket for snake dispatching, get crimped shot shells.

Just FYI, when I experimented with 9mm shot shell, I got bad "donut" patterns, which means the shot was going all around EXCEPT the place I was aiming at. I'm assuming .22 shot would do the same...

@ Dave R
I am going to shoot them through a rifle so it will probably be more accurate; though at 5+ meters that may happen to me, time will tell.

Cain -

Shooting shotshells through a rifled barrel will tend to spread the shot pattern quite a bit.
At one time, there were un-rifled .22's made just for this purpose, and Remington still catalogs a pump action (572) that is smooth-bore.

Don't feed CCI ones from the magazine, the blue capsule will break and you'll get shot all over the innards of the gun.

I use the crimped full brass Federal or Remington ammuntion. We shoot ritz crackers kind of like skeet. When I was a kid, we shot a thing called Mo-Skeet-o clay targets with the crimped shotshell ammuntion. The 10/22 I have cycles the crimped ammo well just like a 22lr. The CCI plastic nose sometimes shatters on the edge of the feed ramp.

The blue plastic shoots out the muzzle down range, not ejected with the
case.

While it will work it is not very effective. I have used a lot of these in a long barreled S&W revolver and it was only good for about 5-6 feet at the most. I used it for snakes and a big snake took more than a few shots to finish him off. A shot to the head on a smaller snake did just fine.

If you want to use shot shells say for snakes. I would go to a 44 mag or 45 Colt handgun using shot shells. I've used those too and they do a number on a snake but they also have a very limited range.

The best would be a T/C Contender shooting .410 shot shells. They have a choke and almost as much range as a .410 shotgun. I can tell you from experience they do a lot of damage close up.

When I go into the woods I load 3 of the cylinders of my 686+ with shotshells just for snakes. Good luck.

I don't want to be anywhere near close enough to a rattlesnake or water mocassin to hit it with .22 shot. That is gonna be one ticked off snake.

That's the problem with the .22 shot shells, you gotta be close.

Not sure about the .22 shot-shell by CCI, but the .40 shot shell by CCI is great for rabbits out to around 20ft got 3 of them yesterday riding around my hunt club.

I've found CB caps to be far more useful for the things I thought I might use a 22 shotshell for.

Feeding either into the chamber of a 10/22 isn't particularly easy for my fingers.
