Federal 7mm elk ammo
So my buddy got a new rifle in 7mm Remington mag,we went to get ammo and I told him to get federal trophy bonded tipped. I didn't realize it was in140 gr instead of 160.
You think he will be alright using it? I think it would hold together and penetrate. It cost $50 and u can't return it |

It will be fine. The 7mm mag was originally based on a 140 gr. bullet and it's plenty for elk as long as you put it where it's supposed to go.

My thoughts too. The 160's better aerodynamics come into play at extreme range, but at reasonable ranges I think you'll be fine. It is a premium bullet that will hold together. Some of the lighter bullets are designed for quick expansion on deer sized game, but the trophy bonded should be fine.

!40 gr. 7mm bullet sectional density = .248
165 gr. 30 cal bullet sectional density = .248 You are fine for elk with 140 gr. Buddy of mine has shot elk for years with his 30-06 using 150 gr Winchester Super X ammo. |

A bonded 140 grain will be ok.
I have seen the lighter weight 7mm bullets come apart many times on elk, but the bonded ones will be ok. He may not get an exit however, so making a good shot is all the more important as there will not be much of a blood trail if there is no exit. This is not a problem if the shot placement is good. Poor bullet placement is always poor, but it's a bit less of a problem if you have a good blood trail to follow. |

I use 139 grain Hornady GMX in 7mm RM for elk and it works great. Bullet construction is it....... not grains.

people have taken elk with 55gr .223 rem ammo, his 140s out of a 7 rem mag will be fine.
