I just picked up 296 at a gun show. They had several but sold them out. Price was not even inflated. I noticed every store has tons of Green Dot around. It must be useless!

It comes in you just have to be the first to see it. I happen to have been the first and last to see allot of powder before the shortage happened.

If this is a powder you like and know its performance, you may want to place an order for 2 8# jugs and be done with it - you might have to wait about 4 weeks, but you should have enough for a while

Thanks, BuckRub. I took a chance today and snatched up 4# of Win 296. It looks like it is real close to the H110. I'm going to load a few rounds and see how I like it.

It would seem our wonderful Government has complicated things with its order of 1.6 billion rounds. I doubt the shortage will be over anytime soon

Maybe our governments plan is all coming together after all. Soon our eyes may be opened.

Too old to cut it or not?

Speaking of ammo... I have about twenty five rounds of .45 cal 230 gr. Winchester Black Talon "Deep Penetration" that I bought about twenty years ago. First off, someone told me it is illegal to own. Is it? Secondly, at what age does well-protected name-brand ammo become unreliable? It was really expensive even twenty years ago, so should I shoot it up or continue to keep it in my Glock 21 home defense piece?

Thanks for the help.

First of- not illegal. Second- it may go bad on your kids or grandkids if its no shot by then. And last- yes keep it in your gun for defense rounds BUT if anyone ever breaks into your home while you are there Don't save it, shoot however much you need.

In fact, according to Hodgdon, H110 and W296 are exactly the same powder, just re-branded. Same with HP38 and W231. If you look in the hodgdon.com load data you will see they show the exact same powder charges for both of them.

2nd BuckRub. They're not ilegal, they were pulled off the market by Winchester after the media in (can you guess?) California said they "kill better". The medical profession had a fear that the sharp "talons" could penetrate the surgical gloves transmitting blood borne disease. At that point Winchester said pi$$ on it, and only sold them to law enforcement, and eventually discontinued them all together.

NWPilgrm, that's why I grabbed the 296, I had heard they were the same. But I had also heard they weren't. I did check the Hodgdon site and the load data was the same for both and there was a line so I figured it may end up a sad story of me not having powder if I took too long to act. Glad I did, and thank for confirming the good choice!

Buyer Beware

On February second, I ordered powder from MidwayUSA without paying attention to the delivery warnings. When I received my order (Feb 11th) sans powder, I called Midway. Found out Midway does not have a clue as to the availability of the powder they state “is in stock”. They do not have any way to track or confirm any powder orders. I then ordered powder from Graf & Sons after the phone call to Midway (02/11/03). I signed for the powder shipment from Grafs yesterday (03/29/03) and am reloading today. Midway still doesn't have a clue if my order was received or processed by their distributor, yet they have my money for the powder and hazmat shipping. While I continue to order other products from Midway, I will never order powder from MidwayUSA again…

I was agreeing with you Buck

Luckily, I went on my weekly round and picked up some more 110 and some bullets this morning. The hazmat charges and month wait at some stores just make me want to stay with my LGS's. Especially now that I have a little stock of assorted powders.

I have an unopened pound of Alliant Power Pro 300 if you're interested. I'll let it go for $25 plus shipping. I'm anxious to try this powder for magnum loads, I'm hearing good things about it!

Buyer Beware

Based on my previous post #19; while I received the Graf and Sons powder order on 02/29/03, I waited until today (04/12/13) to call MidwayUSA for status on my powder order. Was told the order I placed on 02/01/13 may not be shipped until June and all powder listings are now listed as “Temporarily unavailable” in their web site. I canceled the order and called Butch’s reloading and ordered Accurate 2530 powder. Received the order acknowledgement soon after and later today received the “Shipped” notice. Looks like MidwayUSA is going out of the Smokeless Powder business.
