You think your gun kicks ...sure lol

I am always hear people talk about how bad their shotgun recoils.Like the super nova it's suppose to be so light(8lbs) yet kicks so bad,,, or people with 45/70's or similar and 3" turkey loads etc.Well i got a stoeger p-350 weighs 6.3 lbs 3.5"
i have yet to shoot 3.5" just bought my first box tonight .Now usually i shoot 3" 00b loads which have 70 ftlbs recoil give or take around that of a 458 win mag.Wonder how much these 18 pellet 00b will compare ?Maybe 90 lbs of recoil 18 pellets of 00 is 2 1/4 oz + the buffer .

You know what would be some real kick?

Two 10 gauge 3.5 in Turkey Load Magnums shot out of a double barrel at the same time. I'd love to fire that, right before my shoulder explodes off.

Hmmm......who ever told you that the SuperNova kicks so bad....well, I would have to question that statement just a bit. I've been shooting a SuperNova for a couple of years now and don't consider it to be a hard kicker at all....and I'm only 5'4" tall. (not exactly the 300 pound gorilla that can absorb all kinds of recoil) I'll admit that I would prefer a pad if I am going to shoot several hundred rounds in a row (practice day at the range).....but that is only because the chance of missing the pocket a couple of times goes up pretty good when you are running everything against the clock and shooting that many rounds.

P-350

6.3 lbs - that would be the pistol grip version (Stoeger's website says a tad more - 6.4). 18 00 buck at 54 grains each is 972 grains. Remington says 1125 fps.
Figure 40 grains of powder. Recoil is 77 ft.lbs.
Out of a pistol grip gun, not me.

My upland 20 ga that is super light has a pretty good kick, for a 20. But it is built for speed. Nothing that you cant handle. I am not recoil sensitive. I shot everything up to a .416 Rem Mag, and I weight about 150 pounds. I think alot of it is the way you hold what your firing, and alot upstairs from talk.

i only notice recoil when i shoot from a bench. Now when i shoot off hand i keep my elbow close to my ribs and a 30-06 its a baby to shoot.I think with proper training and technique etc for firearm handling.recoil isn't even a factor

A 30-06 is a baby regardless of how it is shot.

The Nova and Supernova are the heaviest of the popular pumps and handle recoil from the heavy kickers about as well as any pump. I don't know where the rumor got out that they kick hard. I'm assuming that people see the plastic stock and assume they are light. A set of postal scales says different.

I'm about as recoil tolerant as anyone, but a few 3.5" lead turkey loads from both the Nova and a 3.5" Remington 870 are enough for me. I've never met a turkey that made mad enough to to endure that. My 3" loads kill them dead enough for me.

I'll tell you what, next time you're in my area we can head to the club and you can touch off a Ruger #1 45/70 (7#) with a 405g load, loaded for a strong action.

I don't shoot buckshot. But I do spend five days in Canada hunting geese and ducks - usually a case of 3" during that time. Is a piece of cake compared to the 45/70 - even with moderate (lever-action loads) 300g.

Kidding aside, if the 3.5 is so bad (it is rude), why shoot it? Shoot a round or two to pattern it and call it a day. Go, 3.5 for hunting and HD. Go back to the 2 3/4 for blasting though I'm not sure what blasting there is with buck unless you are doing 3 gun.

im not saying it to much for meh im laughing at other people who complain about shotgun recoil .that 45/70 still is only 60 ft lbs max,,, the 3.5" buckshot has 10 ft lbs more of recoil than 3" cousin

3.5" 00 loads aren't too bad. Not out of my Mossberg 835 (24" barrel) at least. Not sure how that measures up in weight compared to your gun. Not too much worse than 3" 15 pellet 00 loads.

Now the 3.5" 2oz turkey loads, yeah, those are another story.

The 00 loads are roughly 2oz of lead at roughly 1125 fps. The turkey loads are 2oz of lead at around 1350 fps IIRC.

Yep, and the difference between a .243 and a .30-06 is in the realm of about 8-10 ft lbs (depending on load selection). I bet most folks can tell the difference.

Had a recoil operated Model 300 Ithaca 12 ga. That beast looked like door knob off a Chinese brothel with all of the bling on it and would loosen your fillings with low brass shells.

Got it in a trade and quickly unloaded it due to the nasty kick.

Sounded like an old cash register drawer closing when it cycled and the barrel would ring when you flicked it with your fingernail.

Too shiny and too noisy.

recoil velocity

Quote:
87 ft lbs recoil
Really not me.
One of the additional factors when shooting a heavy recoiling gun - maybe more important to comfort than the free recoil - is the recoil velocity of the firearm. Good old Isaac Newton, y'know.
That 1200 fps 18 pellet 00 load makes that 6.3 lb gun come back at 30 ft/sec.
It is the light weight of the gun that allows for the high velocity.
A 416 Rigby fired from the same weight gun (6.3 lbs) would have slightly more free recoil and about the same recoil velocity.
The T/C Encore (6 3/4lbs) can be had in .416 R if anyone would like to shoot a light gun and a heavy cartridge for comparison.

3.5" 00B kicks like a mule, I've put a box through my Nova, and keep it in the tube. It's definitely not something for recreational shooting, but entertaining in its own way. Those shells are 2¼oz of lead being accelerated very quickly, basically it's like being punched in the shoulder.

For what it's worth, after that one box I bought a Limbsaver and Benelli 14oz mercury recoil tube.

If you want a man-stopper, that's it right there.

edit:
Almost forgot to mention, the recoil blew my magazine extension apart, sending the spring down range, followed by the embarrassing "thud thud thud" of shells sliding out of the front of the tube and hitting the ground. In hindsight it was quite funny, but do make sure your mag tube is clamped on

After shooting 50 rounds through my 1100 with no recoil pad attached my shoulder was black & blue. *Note to self* Buy a freakin recoil pad for Remington 1100!
