An auction sale is coming up locally, advertising a S&W Model 3 .38 revolver. My understanding was that Model 3's are rather spendy & not usually a surplus item. Is it possible that this is another Smith model/reproduction they are claiming is a #3 ?. The serial number is K8376**. It is a left over item from a defunct police department...THNX

I may be wrong but I believe the only K prefix was on the K frames and according to my quick reference booklet your serial number falls in line at 1968.
There was a line of Model 3s but they were made from 1870 - 1907 or thereabouts.
More than likely it is a K frame from the 1960s if it's an old police firearm.
