Just trying to keep an eye out, and report any large supplies.

Wideners?
Anyone ever bought from them. Front page of the website says you will be billed before the item is shipped, i've heard that can be a red flag.
Anyone ever use the Wolf primers? If I order 5000 and get them $20 per 1000 as it says, add shipping, haz mat etc. it comes to $27 per 1000. That is exactly what I pay locally, but then I have to pay tax, Winchester primers by the way. I hate to sacrafice quality for 7.5%.

Sorry for not just thanking Doby
I read my post and realized I should have just thanked Doby for the info. Sorry to hijack the thread. I am not in an area where primers are in shortage. I have a Grafs location near my work that has cases of primers, so I was more looking at price than availability issues.
Sorry again, and thanks for looking out for us Doby.

All very relevant questions. My understanding of Widener's is they are a top notch company and are widely supported. I just ordered 3K of the CCI SPP that they had in stock last week. They had something like 354K SPP then.
It is also my understanding that Wolf primers go bang just as reliably as any other. I have not personally used them but that is my understanding, and with the shortages the way they are, any primer is better than an empty hole in your brass where a primer should go. If they had Wolf SPP right now I would get another 3K. Last edited by Doby45; February 27, 2009 at 01:01 PM. Reason: Spelling |

I paid $90 per 5k Wolf primers @ Powder Valley. Last time I checked, though, they were out of stock. I bought 30k, so the $20 hazmat wasn't too much of a factor.

PV has raised their price on the Wolf primers to the same price as Wideners. I bought 5k SP of Wolf from PV before the price increase. I have had no issues with the Wolfs. What you can do to cut the hazmat and shipping costs is order stuff with some friends. Me and 2 Buds split the hazmat and shipping and it only cost me $13.00.

I just ordered 2000. Cost me $38 per thousand with shipping and hazmat fees. That's not much more than they are locally (it's very expensive around here) but nobody has them in stock.

Everything I've heard about Wolf primers suggests they are very good. More consistent than some domestic brands. Europeans and Scandinavians and Russians all take target shooting very much more seriously than the American public does (their top shots have groupies, if you can imagine that!). Wolf has to compete selling into that market along with Lapua and Norma. So do brands like Sellier & Bellot, which I think explains why we are often surprised by how well that less expensive stuff shoots.

Anyone want to go in on some?
I am getting ready to order some of these primers. I am going to buy 5000 for me. Does anyone want to get in on it with me and split the hazmat cost? I work in St. Louis Missouri and live in Illinois just across the river.
I will probably order tomorrow if I don't hear from anyone.

I just got 7000 wolf LP before the price went up. Widener's is a good place to order from.

Good Company! I've bought a lot from them and haven't had any issues. They are swamped right now like most people but you do get your stuff. And I've yet to have them screw anything up.

Quick question
I usually use Winchester large pistol primers for all my needs including 44 mag. It says on the box, for standard or magnum applications. What about the Wolf large pistol primers? They also sell Magnum large pistol primers, so I am concerned that I shouldn't use the regular in my 44 mag loads.

In 98% of my .44 loads I use standard primers. They use Unique and magnum primers the groups are significantly larger with the CCI 350s, same with .357. When using 2400 in heavy loads I also use standard primers in both calibers. When using 296 it's recommended to use magnum primers as this powder can be dangerous of not used as recommended which also includes no light loads below 3% less than max. Btw H110 is the equivalent of W296 and the same rules apply.
There may be other powders that are new I'm unaware of where a magnum pistol primer should be used. The one thing in my experience I've noticed is that the standard primers have given me the better accuracy when other components are exactly the same.

Finally I see a place where they are not sold out. Both MidwayUSA and Cabela's is sold out of any primers.
