Remington 722 barrel removal
A friend received in trade an old rechambered Remington 722 with a barrel that needs to be removed, as it is trashed (wrecked muzzle, bubba gunsmithing crown job, rechambered from .222 to .243, and a rusty bore to top it all off). It obviously has the .243/.308 bolt now, and he'd like to rebarrel it to .308, as the rest of the action and bolt appear to be in decent shape, and the wood is really, really nice.
Can a regular Model 700 barrel wrench/action block (say the Wheeler models from Midway) be used on the 722 to remove this awful barrel? |

Yes, same wrench.

Remember you may need heat. I'm not sure wether the 722's used locktite but all the 700's do and they're a bear to break loose.

The owner has wanted to build a long range accuracy rig some day. This might be his ticket, though he's a very frugal sort. Fortunately he was an armorer back in the 80s, so he may be able to do some of this on his own.

That's what I thought too Jim! But the barrel clearly has a .222 marking on it, which is scratched out and replaced with a nice little cursive ".243 Win" stamp. A .243 Winchester definitely chambers in it.
Judging by the short length of the action (a loaded .243 is slightly longer than the receiver cutout), I think the barrel might be a rebored/rechambered barrel original to the receiver, while the original .222 bolt was replaced with a .243/.308 sized bolt. |
