"custom CVA" sounds oxymoronic.
What you show seems, to me, a butchered C&B pistol. I''ll be kind and call it customized. And, the point is........... |

LOL Rifleman never pulls any punches. Well I will say each to his own. But a better pic might let us appreciate it more. My thing with short cap and ball pistols is, they don't need any more help cutting down on velocity. The long barrel on them helps with more than accuracy. With that said I own a 5.5" barreled NMA, and I know full well what it gives up in the velocity dept.

It looks like a revolver from an alternative universe.
Kind of cool, actually.

Rifleman, the point is that this is a forum. I posted the picture because this forum is for firearm enthusiasts, and with myself being one of them, I enjoy sharing my projects and or ideas with like minded people. Anyways, I appreciate you guys sharing your opinions, and I'll try to get some better pics up here for ya.

And deerslayer, I completely agree with you. I actually removed the rifling and loaded it up with birdshot. I have yet to range test it, but with the smooth bore I would imagine it would make a decent "snake gun", presumably up to around 10 to 12 feet.

I think you're right about that, I used to carry snake loads in my .45 colt, or I did until I thought to try them out on a beer can, had to sneak right up on that booger before it had any effect... damn snake would have to be right about between your knees before you could kill it.. |

I don't know about in a smoothbore that short, but I do know that I fired a derringer in 45/410 with the 2 1/2" shells at 25' and it filled a 2'x3' target with an almost bare spot in the center 9" area. For self defense it would blind and cause arm and leg damage at that distance, but little damage to vital areas. Show us some field trials when you get out to a range.

Yeah as far as a self defense aspect goes, I would keep it as a secondary or back up option... However it could prove quite effective in a home defense situation, I certainly wouldn't want to be on the business end of a few close range, well placed shots lol. Should be able to let some off this weekend, I'll be sure to post pics and results.

It don't look bad at all. I would do a terrible blue job on it to give it that antique look. With that short barrel I don't think you will be happy with the shot pattern. I shoot #9 out of my NMA Sheriff at rats in the cow pasture. Lets just say I don't have to aim much LOL, I just point it in that general direction. But its fun shooting them off the 4 wheeler. I've never noticed any ill effects to the rifling. I melt my home brewed lube and drop the shot in it. Then spoon it out and make sure they are seperate on a paper towel to cool. So every pellet is coated with lube.

Thanks for the compliments guys. Deerslayer, I've never heard of shot damaging the rifling at all, but I've heard that it makes the pattern spread out a lot more than you want...I don't know for sure myself yet but hopefully the smooth bore will keep a tighter pattern. **** with the barrel length, I'd be happy with 6" spread at 10' lol.

So do you have any intentions of shooting balls out of this in your test??? ... Smooth bore or not I would like to know how well it still shoots.. Can not be any worse then the old liberators of WW II fame... And I bet at 10 feet or so you can hit pretty close...

Here is an Idea, I wonder if they make chokes for a .410 shotgun, if so get one then thread that barrel and screw in an XFULL choke. How cool would that be? I'm just thinking out of my rear now. Way too much coffee today!

Indy, yeah I will be, just for curiosities sake lol. We're on the same page as far as effective distance but I might be surprised. And deerslayer, definitely a sweet idea, but I think the size difference in the barrels would be too drastic. However I do have a few more ideas in the works lol, I'll post pics as progress continues

Andy....
I am not a fan of Avenging Angels but I do like the work you did on that revolver.
I have two ASM 1860s (CVA) and I have seen an additional one and none of them have the fluted cylinder. Is this something you added? Also like the grips. I made some grips for one of my 1860s from some black lucite plastic. I see from one of the fotos that I could have spent a liittle more time smoothing and finishing.

Wait a minute....
...I just realized you did not start with an 1860/1.
I should have looked at the size comparison with the ROA. Sorry guys.

No apologies necessary Doc, and thanks for the compliments. Those grips look awesome by the way, is that the color that the plastic originally was or is that something you did?
