185 gr Rem Corelokt, IMR4064. Haven't managed to kill anything with that combo just yet, but it shoots tight from every Mauser I've tried it in.

My M48 does not like the round nosed Remington 8mm ammo. Every round that feeds from the left side of the magazine jams. It is next to impossible to find any other 8mm hunting ammo around here.
It's sad, people don't know what a great rifle the Mauser is.

some of my mausers shoot better with a flat base bullet
the one that they all like is Sierra 150gr Pro Hunter the sweet spot ( or node ) is at 2800 fps ( 1895 Turk, 1916 Gew. sniper, 1936 VZ24 sniper, 1938 Vz24 sniper, 1942 K98, 3- Bosian snipers(M48s) ) |

8mm game bullet...
My M-48 really likes Nosler's 180 grain Accubonds.
Got a deer with that combination 2 years ago; you never saw a deer's engine room more thoroughly ruined. Use Accubonds in my 6.5mm and .30 cal hunting rifles as well; all perform very satisfactorily.

I have had very good results with the hornady 150gr spire points and the 185 gr rem corelokt in both my turks and M48 with 4064. None of the 10 or so deer ever went more than a 25 yards most just dropped. Most shots were 50 yards or under.

At one time I bought a thousand Remington bulk .323 bullets. I think they were originally made for the 8mm Remington Magnum so I won't use them for hunting as they might not expand at 8 X 57 velocities. At any rate, they are 1 1/2 minute bullets from my Mausers with their original sights off of a bench for 5 shot groups. Considering the cost, they are about my favorite bullet. Perhaps they are still available. Hope so as I'm getting down to only a hundred or so left.
For serious shooting, I like the Sierra 175 grain spitzer. It is exceedingly accurate in my German and Yugo Mausers. I like 4895 in this and my other medium capacity mid bore rifles.

thanks everybody !!
got some great info from ya'all, with some new options to try. I really appreciate it !!
I also have good groups with Sierra 175 pro hunter and H4895 @ 2600fps. Was just reading an article by Mike Venturino, he has good luck with the Hornady 195 spitzer and Hogdon - Varget powder. Last edited by tahoe2; February 13, 2012 at 01:52 AM. |

Tahoe,
Varget has been quite popular with 30 cal shooters on the NM course with the 168 and 175 grain bullets. It is reportedly temperature insensetive and operates at about the same pressures at 40 degrees as it does at 90 degrees. I'm still buring through my stock of 4895, but it is on my list of powders to try. It's been out for at least 13 or 14 years if my memory serves me. You'd think that I would have got around to it by now. By the way, that Hornady 195 grain projectile should mimic the performance of the heavy ball load for the 8mm Mauser pretty closely.
