Versatile
The 44 Special and 44 Magnum are both versatile rounds that can be loaded mild, medium,or hot.I have some relatively light loaded 44 magnum that I use in my S&W 29-2(no endurance package)and it's pleasant enough to shoot.I also have some hotter loads for my Marlin carbine and my Ruger Vaquero.

I LOVE the 44 Mag. I've had my S&W M29 with 8 3/8" barrel since the mid '80's. I have to sheepishly admit that I had never shot 44special through it. I bought some Mag ammo from Underwood recently and thought I may as well try some Special, just for the heck of it. At the range, my buddy and I could not believe how mild 44 special is out of this size handgun. He said that it seemed like a pop-gun, yet out of this length of barrel it is fairly powerful. Lots 'o fun. I have a box of Buffalo Bore 270gr JFN for any big stuff (and will probably have the rest of this box for a looong time), Underwood 240gr JHP for any normal game taken in Texas, and for general plinking/target shooting, any inexpensive Magnum or Special will do.

Purchased one (S&W 629-6) for a trip to big bear land. I found out that I actually like shooting it. Now it's one of my favorite guns. With the cost of ammo I had to turn to reloading and as luck would have it I found a load that grouped pretty darn good too.

I agree with Redhawk5.5. If you're not a reloader, the best BANG for your buck is Remington UMC 180gr SP. Usually can pick 'em for $25-35 in 50rd boxes. Lots of slow-burning powder under a lightweight 180gr bullet makes an impressive fireball and overpressure sound, especially if you have a short barrel or muzzle brake/compensator. Nearly as loud as the deer hunters scoping-in their 12ga shotguns with 3" magnum slugs at the indoor range..
My favorite 'shooter' .44 Mag is my blue 1994 Taurus M44 with 8" compensated barrel.

I have owned three .44 Mags over the years. Great hunting gun and have taken several antelope and deer over the years with that caliber. The first and second ones I had were Ruger NM Super Blackhawks, both with 7 1/2" barrels. The third was a NM Super Blackhawk with a 4 5/8" barrel. I loved them all. The last one I sold a few years back and recently have been shopping for another. I have it narrowed down to a Ruger Super Redhawk Alaskan. I want something with a short barrel that's stout and of course stainless. It will be my grizzly bear tamer when I venture into the hills from my house.

I like my SBH a lot (but I also like my other guns). For hot loads I use 429244 gas checks. For plinking I use a Lee tumble lube bullet, and for medium/warm loads I just got a "Keith" 429421 mold. Can't wait to try the Keith bullet!

Picked up the .44 Mag today that I've had my eye on. Looks like I need to blow the dust off my reloading dies.

My first handgun was a Ruger Super Blackhawk, kind of a mistake, but after buying a used Ruger single-six .22 as a second gun, I eventually got the hang of pistol shooting.
Today I have a S&W model 29 and I seldom shoot full power loads through it. Mostly loads that sort of are between .44 special and .44 magnum. That's the cool thing about these revolvers. You aren't married to full power magnum loads for the gun to cycle, making them extremely versitile. |

Got a set of RCBS 44 Mag dies the other day, and loaded up a small batch with a 240gr rnfp, a wonder wad and a case full of Goex 3F. That was a whole lot of fun out of my 7 1/2" Virginian Dragoon!!

Funniest question ever asked me -when I told some people I had gotten my deer with my trusty old M29 [ not the first !!] ,someone asked "is that enough ? " I was speechless for a bit .After a bunch of deer , up to 250 lbs ,all one shot kills , I'd have to say yes !!

I love it. Shot and reloaded tens of thousands of rounds, most shot in competition. I like versatility in a gun and the maggie is very versitile. Can be loaded up or down. I am not very big and rounds loaded to a little over 'factory' do not bother me. Max-max loads with 300 gr. or heavier bullets can be very tiring.
Since damaging my shoulders my Redhawk has retired to the gun safe. Sadly. |

Today my father and I were at the range and I let off a few cylinders of .44 magnum and everyone just looked at me funny, like I was over kill...Who else loves the .44 magnum?
I'd squint my eye's and grit my teeth and say "Go ahead make.......!" then smile back at them. Knowing me, I'd say "you want to try it?" I love the funny look's esp from funny looking people. Dueling banjo style. Ding ding ding ding ding, ding......... |

The most amazing shot I ever made in my life was with a 7.5 inch Redhawk, shooting 240 grain JHPs. Not to mention the sheer exhilaration of touching it off at an indoor range [especially when everyone else is shooting .40s & 9s]. Yep, call me a fan!

Well, to join the chorus, I love it, and everyone who's ever fired my .44 Magnums (I only have a four-inch 629 and a Marlin lever action) loves it. Come to think on it, the Marlin may be my favorite gun for just good, clean shooting fun!
I need to add a Model 29, and to look into the .44 Special. Another round I like is the .41 Magnum, but I only know it from a friend here on TFL.

I purchased a 7.5 inch Ruger Redhawk over the weekend, so I'm happy to say I just joined the club.
The .44 mag, a fun way to get carpal tunnel syndrome. |
