I was looking for an M&P Shield about 2 weeks ago and they are hard to find. I found the M&P 9c, checked it out and the differences were minimal IMHO. Here's the stats from S&W:

9c: 6.7" length, 4.3" height, 1.2" width, 21.7 oz, 12+1 capacity
Shield: 6.1" L, 4.6" H, 0.95" W, 19 oz, 7+1 capacity

Slide length is easy for me to conceal. Width and height are more important for my frame. The Shield is 0.25" thinner. The 9c is 0.3" shorter.

I bought the 9c (available and met my desires) and put it in a Remora holster. It conceals very well under a normal fitting t-shirt. I can see the benefit of the reduced thickness though and should I have a chance to handle the Shield, may add it to the collection as well. I don't think you can go wrong with either. The 8 vs. 13 rounds conversation is personal preference. Agree that a holster or safety on a striker fired pistol is a must. I don't think either is a suitable pocket pistol for my frame and there are better choices if pocket carry is what you desire. I am holstered at 3-4 o'clock with an IWB.

I picked up a Shield today and will compare it to my 9c very soon. I'll be particularly interested in the trigger differences.

There is a shop that has had them for $367.99 for a few weeks now. They must have just ran out of them within this last week because they are out of stock now. I'm sure they will be getting more in soon.

Look at a Sig P239 in 9MM. It conceals very well IWB.

Although the Sig 239 is a great gun, its pretty damn big and heavy for a single stack 9. Its the same exact size pretty much as a M&PC, heavier, and holds less rounds. Only Advantage is DA/SA if that is your thing. Not to mention the OP is considering two guns, ranging from $400-500. The Sig is not even close to that price range.

Dragline45 - don't waste your time with PAT701. He's making the rounds... And, I see he's back at it again tonight on THIS thread now......

Let's see - you said the same thing here on Page 2:

Oh, and one more (#31):

Maybe all of us should go search out Sig 239 threads and suggest to everyone that they should buy a Shield? Hmm?

Bought the Shield a couple of weeks ago and the more I shoot it the more impressed I am with it. Bought it for a carry gun for my wife since it fits her hand so well. It will replace her Glock 26 which was a little uncomfortable in reaching the trigger but still very workable.

Settled on the G26 after trying the M&P9c and XD9 compact. Found each of those to be vary comperable. Each would have been fine but shot the G26 a little better.

She loves the Shield, shoots it well and is very comfortable with it. She doen't like recoil and S&W did a great job on this one. 100 - 150 rounds at the range is no problem, it's fun to shoot. My daughter shot it this week and had fun with it. I have a feeling I may be looking for another one.

Wow is that guy serious. Sig should pay him to advertise for them. I can understand really liking a gun, and the Sig 239 really is an awesome gun, but that's beyond overboard.

Isn't the trigger better on the Shield, or is it the same as the 9C?

The Shield is supposed to be better, though I am quite fond of the one on my 9c as well.

If you go to the ~4:50 mark in the link below, you can see the trigger on the Shield in action.

Neither is a pocket gun so Im going with the 9c. If Im using a holster its going to be a good one, and the weight difference and width isnt enough to matter.

Since both pistols are really about the same length and height, it boils down to weight and thickness.

The Shield is super thin. I find that it feels good in my hand still, but it doesn't fill my hand like the 9c does.

When it comes to concealment, I can hide either pistol very easily. I don't find the 9c to be much harder to hide than the Shield. I also don't find the weight of the 9c to be problematic. With that said, I do think the Shield carries a little nicer and is slightly less obtrusive than the 9c. I can literally forget I have the Shield on.

The question then becomes how many rounds do you want in your pistol. With the Shield you surrender the most important advantage of 9mm - capacity. I don't think the 8 round magazine is a good idea for the Shield, I don't know why you would use it for concealment. With the 8 round magazine installed the Shield has the same length as a full-size M&P or Glock 17. Why buy a sub-compact handgun only to use it with an extended magazine that makes it as large as a full-size handgun? Just carry a full-size handgun. Shaving an inch or two off the barrel doesn't make the gun any more concealable - concealment is mostly in the length of the grip.

I like my Shield and carry it, however the 9c is probably a slightly more versatile pistol. You can't really go wrong with either. I like the Shield because of it's small size and reduced weight and will continue to carry it in rotation with my G19.

It's already been posted on page one, but here's my full review of the Shield that includes a comparison to the 9c:

In my state.. Connecticut...I am currently limited to no more than 10 rounds. What good is a handgun designed for 12 or more rounds?
I can carry any handgun out there but what good is carrying a larger gun with only 10 rounds in the magazine? Might as well carry slim.
Thank you liberals for making my life less safe.
Sorry just had to vent.

I'm going to pick up a shield for a Christmas gift to myself when I get my 10yr pin this month. I checked out the shields over the summer and again last week. I think it fits all my requirements. Enough grip, slim to help conceal, and reliable. I only wish Smith would have shaved about 3 more ounces off it's weight.

That being said I traded my M&P9c this year. Leaving me with a couple of extra holsters, a fullsized mag, and X-grip. The reason I ditched my 9c was, for me it was just too thick. Same for my PT145, P229, and the new SR45. I bought a LCP after carrying the 9c for a year and have carried it for 4 years. Now I just feel it's time to step up from the 380. I miss my M&P, but not because I carried it.
