Happen to own not one, but two Ruger Blackhawks in .38-40. The cost of this ammo is the reason I got into reloading in the first place. I've kinda settled into loading a 180g bullet with 6.1-6.4g of Unique.

Any other suggestions? How about W231?

John D (Rockefellow??), go to www.sixgunner.com and start cruising the articles by Paco and John Taffin, both current and in their archives.

You'll find some good stuff there on both powders and loads for .38-40.

Good luck. J.B.

231 would be fine. Lately I've been using TiteGroup with great results. It was designed to be used in the large capacity pistol cases (ie...those that were originally blackpowder catridges); it isn't position sensitive which can be a problem with other powders. The combination of a large case and small loading density gives the powder a lot of room to move around which can affect consistency. TiteGroup helps overcome this little problem.
