Charging loads
I am a newbie to the loading thing and am taking every precaution I can. I have a question about loading .40 SW. Every loading manual that I have looked at has recipies on a particular load that I want, however they generally list the weight of the bullet as a JHP, not a FMJ that I will be loading. Can FMJ and JHP loads be interchanged without error, if all of the other components remain the same, and bullet weights are the same?
thanks |

Two things you can do:
1. Contact the bullet manufacturer for recommendations. 2. Use the starting load for the JHP and work up slowly. The FMJ might have a bit more bearing surface and might make pressures spike a bit early when you near the maximum charge. |

Since you are new to reloading, a switch from one jacketed bullet to another should not be a concern. You should still be working with starting level loads, or as little up from that as is needed to cycle your guns. That leaves more than enough safety margin to swallow as small a change as switching from one bullet to another of the same weight.
Such a change might make a difference with a max or near max load but is of no concern in moderate loads. You do need to watch overall length though. Generally, FMJs need to be a bit longer to have the same seating depth. |

millions later
Sized case, CCI500, 180g FMJ or TCJ-FP, OAL 1.130"+/-.005", 6.0g Alliant Power Pistol.
Finish using a LEE Carbide Factory Crimp die. Av = 890--920fps, based on specific gun.
