BATFE FAQ ... Gone?
For several years I have kept a bookmark to the BATFE FAQ site. I clicked it yesterday to research a question, and ... no more FAQ site. I get the same thing if I search for "BATFE FAQ" is a search engine. The result is the same URL I had bookmarked, and it no longer works.
http://www.atf.gov/firearms/faq Does anyone know if the BATFE has moved the FAQ to a new URL? Or have they just stopped paying for that miniscule amount of server space as part of "sequester" savings? |

If you type "FAQ" into the search window, then links to FAQ pages come up, but they don't look like the old letter and number format I remember from a few years ago.

The ATF sent out an email a couple weeks ago saying they had a new site design rolling out today.
Yeah, on April 1. I don't think they recognize the significance of that. But anyway... My guess is the busted link is due to changes in the structure of the site. I just tried to find the FAQ, and while there's a tab for it on their Firearms page, that little tab tool isn't working. I don't think they have worked the bugs out yet. Incidentally, I am amused that in the sections they list, they have Firearms, Explosives, Arson, and Alcohol & Tobacco. Almost like Arson is its own industry... |

I hope the new format is at least as useful and informative as the old one. Considering the source, I expect that it will not be an improvment. The old FAQ wasn't perfect, but it was helpful.
I wonder how much the gummint spent to revamp the web site? I can't escape the thought that a government that's operating trillions of dollars in the red probably doesn't have an urgent need to redesign web sites that have been fully functional for several years. |

I just checked again. NOW the FAQ link tab is working.
http://www.atf.gov/content/Firearms/..._industry_tabs Correction: Some times it does, some times it doesn't. From what I can tell, they probably didn't spend too much on the redesign. At least, it sure doesn't show. |
