AK ammo question ... brought it home today!

I put my AK ... in a prior posting ... on layaway last week, and was going to pick it in a month or two. But, and there always is a but in life, gun control talk about Tuesday or Wednesday made me nervous so I brought her home today.

They had some cheap Russian ammo on hand ... TUL-AMMO, so I grabbed 100 rounds. Is this decent ammo, as I doubt it. What ammo is decent, non-corrosive, and cheap to shoot.

What do you shoot, and where do you get it???

I shot a few more photos at home.

Right now? Shoot whatever you can find.

As a rule? Well... they were designed to shoot Russian steel cased, so feed it that and it'll shoot forever.

Congrats on putting your hands on a rifle. Tula shoots well in my AK, my best 5-shot group at 100 yards is 1.6".

I picked up some tula too about 2 weeks ago but I have tried it out yet. I like silver bear or golden bear for range work. It's pretty clean and accurate. I think it might be awhile before you find some. I usually wait until Sportsman guide has free shipping specials and load up. The silver bear and golden bear are non corrosive and I have been shooting it for awhile now with no problems.

Thanks for the Ammo tips ... I am very concerned about ammo with all the anti-gun campaigns going on at the moment. I will look about. I see the brand Wolf get mentioned around, but I have never used any. I am used to shooting custom hunting stuff, and not too much of this surplus stuff. I will have to learn as I go in this discipline...

Great! They had new boxes of it at my gun shop, but were rationing it out and limiting purchases to 100 rounds to spread the wealth I guess... I will look for more closer to home, maybe Dunham Sports has some.

Buy up that Tula! an AK is meant to use that ammo. My AK eats everything I feed it, no problems whatsoever. Tula, Wolf, Bear, Herters, everything. In fact, my WASR doesn't even know what brass tastes like.

Tula is just fine for your AK. I have an arsenal sgl21 and I regularly shoot Tula. Its a wee bit harder to get a hold of now. If you can pick it. Do it.

I don't shoot Tula out of my AR but I use their 9mm and 45.

Unless you do well with the classic iron sights and are not familiar with these, you might read about the Tech Sights for the AK, SKS, Ruger 10-22, Marlin 60 etc. My Only Regret was not buying it much sooner.

The fully-adjustable version for my SKS turned it into a different rifle
The old leaf sight needed a bit of muscle to remove, but can be re-installed.
As long as people like apertures, they can just imagine what the much improved sight distance will do.

Which flavor of AK did you buy?

Classic sight shooter for life...

Quote:
Unless you do well with the classic iron sights
I do pretty good with classic iron sights, and I mean classic, I am old school. In a post in the blackpowder forum I shoot my flintlock, which is an exact copy of a 1770 Christian Springs rifle, made with molds from an original rifle, and the sights are tiny, original sights ... shooting small targets at 100 yards offhand, flinter I remind you, and I still do OK, considering my age. But, and there always is a but in life, I would do better with a peep! My first rifle at age 14, an O3A3, is a peep sight rifle as you probably know, and I still hunt with it.

I like the AK, SAIGA--photos in above opening post--and may keep it as is, considering the usage it was designed for. I do not like the sights as they are, and I may open up the rear to look like an express sight, which I have shot a lot on my big bore rifles over the years. The distance between the eye and first sight is more conducive to express sights I think, opening up the light around the front post, which I may put an express bead on. This rifle is for close to medium people size targets at speed, not slow and deliberate prairie dog shooting at 400 yards. Like golf clubs each rifle has a use. This is how I see it at the moment.

The gun store would only sell 100 rounds to a customer, and the store is a long drive to go back for more considering the cost of the gas. I will look closer or on the Internet to get more if it shoots well in my AK...

I have included a photo of the sights that I shot yesterday...

That is wonderful news, thanks!!!

FOR ME RELIABILITY IS NUMBER ONE, NOT ACCURACY, FOR MY DANGEROUS GAME RIFLES, AND THIS IS WHAT AN AK IS, as were my duty guns!!!

The most accurate rifle in the world that goes click when a lion is charging, or when a drug crazed, edged-weapon-carrying human is charging ... is WORTHLESS!!!

Do you have a sporter saiga or has it been converted back to a normal AK profile? I'm curious

I own a Saiga (or whats left of it) as well

I like your new AK! As far as ammo, my brother has had a few hangfires in his WASR with "hotshot" brand ammo, not sure if it was just a bad batch but be aware of that.

You can put a Mojo rear ghost peep sight sight on the rear leaf mount on your AK --- but your zero can move easily --- with the Mojo's revolving sight adjustment turrent. I do like the A-2 flashhider over the AK/74 muzzle break; for the AK47. Is it the one with the bolt hold-open lever, on the right hand side of the trigger guard? I just bought a AK-74 carbine like that...but it doesn't have the ventilation holes in the forearm; like the AK-47 does.

It is a normal AK, there are a few images of it here. It is the new version with the trigger group moved forward to improve balance, etc...

Someone noted they have had 3000 rounds of Tula ammo go off without failure ... WELL DONE! I hope we can keep getting it with the FEDS all over us like stinkbugs in July!!!

First of all, congratulations on your rifle. I swear those things would shoot rocks if they would chamber..lol. Seriously though I have a friend that has put many thousands of rounds of Tula through his AK and no problems. He swears by it and refuses to shoot anything else...

I hope we can still get it after today's release of New Gun Control laws that may be introduced!!! They are after the ammo more than the guns I believe...
