Stevens 235 Double Barrel 12 gauge HELP!

External triggers.
Can you shoot standard or modern 2 3/4" shells out of these guns? I had heard that older shotguns were chambered for what was then a a standard 2 1/2" shot-shell.
Also, if the later is true can these guns be bored to except a2 3/4"?
I', looking at one to buy online but the seller doesn't know what it is chambered for.
Any information would be helpful.

I wouldn't shoot any ammunition in it until it is checked by a competent gunsmith. I doubt if it is safe to fire modern 2-3/4 inch shells.

Is it stamped Arms & Tool or J. Steven Arms Co.? If it's A&T it was made prior to Savage buying Stevens in 1920. Actually, A&T on it means it was made between 1912 and 1916. The plant became New England Westinghouse in 1916 and made Mosin-Nagant rifles. Then it was sold in 1920 to Savage and they at some point they reintroduced the 235.

My uncle has a Stevens double barreled hammer gun from that pre-WWI era that belonged to my grandfather. We won't shoot it, it's just too old and worn at this point. I don't think it's been shot in 20 or 30 years, maybe longer.

As with all older shotguns, a trip to see Mr Smith is mandatory. A good smith can go over this and advise you if it's safe to shoot, what ammo to use and what it needs.

Did you mean external hammers?

Some of these old guns can be rechambered for longer shells, but ti's not cheap.

I also found a site that I can buy 2 1/2" shells from made loaded specifically for older shotguns.

You're welcome. Polywad has low pressure 2 1/2" loads....
