Yes, I think so.

If a vote for a gun ban comes up, those politicians who actually support gun ownership from an idealogical standpoint would oppose it on principle. Unlike Reid who, if he couldn't vote for it, would not actively oppose it.

Votes do count, but for people like Reid who may face a very strong opponent or decide to retire, we lose our leverage. With no leverage and no consequences for a yes vote, Reid would certainly support his party line on a gun ban.

It is best to have friends in congress whose feet we don't have to put to the fire get support our rights.
