Taking another young lady for her first shoot,,,

I just got an E-mail saying she has Sunday off,,,
So we're going to my range for some tin can population control.

She's a 20 year old waitress at my usual watering hole,,,
Her dad is an avid hunter and her younger brother shot skeet through high school.

Somehow she got to be 20 years old,,,
Without ever firing a rifle, shotgun, or a handgun in her life.

For her I think I will take the 4" S&W Model 63 and the 4.5" Ruger 22/45,,,
For me I will take my S&W Model 18 and my 6" Ruger 22/45,,,
And just in case she wants to shoot something bigger,,,
I'll pack along the Model 67 in .38 Special.

In the past I've taken too many guns and just confused the new shooter,,,
This time one revolver and one semi-auto for each of us,,,
And lots and lots of .22 ammo and reactive targets.

The weather will be in the mid-60's and sunny,,,
Should be a nice day for plinking.

good choices..sure to bring a smile you are passing the enjoyment of the shooting sports down . thats great... she'll enjoy it..

me in the same situation..
smith 17 and hi-standard supermatic for me
smith 18 and 5.5 buckmark target for guest
Smith 14 or 15 for centerfire its hard not to like a k frame

keeps the ammo simple, and gives a good mannered semi auto thats cheap to feed..
and a pleasant shooting centerfire

sounds like a good time..
most any of your pairs is a good choice

now if taken in the tom threepersons holster, well that would qualify as a date...and not just a range trip

That is good advise. Especially the reactive targets. The idea is to have fun, not give the new shooter an introduction to every type of gun in your inventory.

The .22s are perfect for the new shooter. I would even go with CB caps in .22 long for the revolver. With those, you won't need ear protection and still get response from the reactive targets.

I'm sure you'll help her develop good habits with respect to grip, trigger squeeze, stance and sight picture -- all made easier with what you've indicated you'll use.

Stay away from magnum or large calibers for at least the first few sessions.

I have seen too many videos of young ladies being tricked into shooting a big rifle or pistol with zero training and prep. Besides being cruel and causing potentially serious injury, they lose interest in the shooting sports.

Please keep us posted on her progress -- The shooting sports are made stronger when we get enthusiastic ladies able to shoot well and communicate all the fun they have!

I'm chuckling here,,,

Nah,,,
My motives are pure.

I'm a pot-bellied 60 year old single man,,,
These young ladies have nothing to fear from me.

I sit in that restaurant's bar and do watch a lot of men my age,,,
Hitting on the young college girls who work there,,,
And they are seriously hitting on them.

I'm determined to not ever be one of "those guys".

Besides,,,
I take as many young men out to shoot as I do young ladies.

Two weekends ago I took a guy out to sight in his scoped rifle,,,
We had a good time shooting his new Savage .22 magnum,,,
Then we burned most of a bulk pack through my Rugers.

I do find it odd that even though I invite as many guys as gals,,,
More gals take me up on the offer than guys.

I've started well over a dozen young people in shooting,,,
Several have kept it up and a couple have obtained their CWL.

Just spreadin' the faith whenever I can.

Nahhh,,,
Not for a newbie.

It's like JASmith said,,,
Quote:

Now having said that,,,
I almost always have my Model 629 in my shooting bag,,,
I take it so if I see someone with a rifle or pistol I would like to try out,,,
I have something tempting and tantalizing to offer them in return for shooting their gun.

On a couple of occasions I have had the young ladies say,,,
"I want to try that one too."

I shoot it first so they can see and hear it's big booming report,,,
Then if they still want to I'll load them up a cylinder.

But for the most part it's a heck of a lot of .22 LR,,,
Maybe some .38 Special or 9mm if they show the desire to try it.

I always want to take pictures,,,

And I have taken some,,,
But no one so far has given me permission to post them here.

And I have asked.

I have a great picture of Hope and Courtney,,,
Both holding S&W 22A pistols they used,,,
And targets with no bullseye left on it.

So, do any of them actually take up shooting as a hobby as a result of your introductions?

I tend to do the same as you over here, when friends from England visit.

I ask if they want to have a crack at shooting some handguns as it is not illegal here and some have done so. Our most recent visitor even wanted to buy a gun and leave it here, with the range, which can be possible in some cases but that was also a bit of male new-toy-itis!! Were he a resident here, he would have definitely taken it up!!

We had to cut the range session short,,,

The temperature was nice but it was soooooo dang windy,,,
We shot one box of .22 LR and called it a day,,,
Red Dirt Oklahoma is no fun in high winds.

She liked my Model 63 though,,,
And we will be going back again in better weather.

I've been wanting to add a .22 handgun, probably a revolver, to the stable for these situations. As is, the softest shooting gun I have is my subcompact 9mm. Most of the new shooters, especially women, put 100 or more through my .22 rifle and maybe one mag through the rest of my guns.

Nice work aarondhgraham, I always enjoy your posts. Now if we could just get you to use ... instead of ,,,

Taking another young lady for her first shoot

How young? What do you mean by "plinking" with all those pistols?

What age is "another young lady"?

Why the full gammat of firearms? There's more time for a second lesson.

My point being that age and basic skills for a new shooter should be eased into caliber. A .22 caliber would first comes to my mind. Proficiency in what she would want to master without the challenge of "boom". What are her safety skills she has learned from you? How old is your untrained shooter student? Does she know to keep the firearm unloaded until ready to fire? Does she know to keep her finger off the trigger until ready to fire? Does she know to point the firearm in a safe postition always, no exception?

It's not what the new shooter has excitement over, but the basic safety skills "she" needs to capture before she wants to move to a larger caliber.

Hello Boncrayon,,,

I'm not understanding your post,,,
I think you're preaching to the choir here.

I said "In the past I've taken too many guns and just confused the new shooter,,,"
I have since learned from that error.

I took one .22 revolver and one .22 semi for her to shoot,,,
I don't think that's excessive.

I always take at least one centerfire handgun,,,
Just in case they have a desire to try a bigger boom,,,
This day it was a S&W Model 15 Combat Masterpiece in .38 Special.

I didn't even unpack it because I knew we wouldn't be there very long.

The young ladies (and men) are all 18 years of age or over,,,
They are table servers at the Italian restaurant/bar I hang out at,,,
They have to be that age minimum or they couldn't serve alcohol to tables.
