Bluing corroding on new gun.
I have a Ruger Super Blackhawk that is less than two months old and the bluing looks like its coming off on the back of the grip. There is also a little coming off on the corner of the trigger guard. It seems like it is slowly getting worse.

It may not be bluing but a finish that looks like buled steel. Check the grip frame it could be made from some aluminum alloy.

Your Blackhawk has an aluminum grip frame that is coated with a product similar to GunKote, a bake-on epoxy. You can refinish it, or send it to Ruger for refinishing, or just live with it.

I thought the regular Blackhawk had an aluminum frame and the Super Blackhawk had a steel frame.

Good point, sounds weird but some people have acidic bodies.

Trust me, I know, having to replace a few parts on Rugers because I didnt check. The bluing salts eat the alloy. If a magnet dosnt stick to it, it dosnt go in the bluing tanks.

I took a closer look at your photo, and your description was right, it looks like it "came off" and did not corrode. If it is that new take it back to the dealer, there should be a warranty on workmanship. Some companies are going to a hot water submersion set up to blue, so they can beat working with caustic chemicals. I used to do a lot of rust bluing, which is a long the same line, and occasionally would get thin spots. It kind of looked like that after a while. A lot of things affect the bluing when rust bluing. Could be the area was not super clean, minerals in the water, impurities in the steel, and things for no reason. If you did not abuse it, I would try taking it back.

Gunplummer "Good point, sounds weird but some people have acidic bodies. "
Oh that describes me to the T as I can corrode things like Stainless Steel almost over night. I touch it, I have to wipe it. |
