Any difference in Remington 6 1/2 SR vs 7 1/2 BR primers?

I've only used the Remington 7 1/2 BR small rifle primers for reloading .204 and .223. My Cabelas store has had the Remington 6 1/2 small rifle primers in stock off and on but no 7 1/2 primers.

Is there any real difference between the two? I might try shooting the .204 out to 300 yards some day but my AR would most likely be 200 yards or so. Thanks.

Remington 6 1/2 primers have thinner cups than the 7 1/2. The 6 1/2 has a cup that is .020" while the 7 1/2 is .025". Here's the recommendations for using RP 6 1/2 primers:
"In rifle cartridges, the 6-1/2 small rifle primer should not be used in the 17 Remington, 222 Remington, 204 Ruger or the 223 Remington. The 7-1/2 BR is the proper small rifle primer for these rounds."
The 6 1/2 won't handle high pressure and you can get slam fires in an AR or primers pierced.
The last Kennedy shot came from the front with matter blown out the back and onto the trunk. Heads don't snap rearward from a rear shot. Never going to convince me otherwise.

As already stated above the 6 1/2 are not to be used in the 223.

From Remington.

In rifle cartridges, the 6-1/2 small rifle primer should not be used in the 17 Remington, 222 Remington, 204 Ruger or the 223 Remington. The 7-1/2 BR is the proper small rifle primer for these rounds.

Seems like the only application for Rem 6 1/2 primers is the 22 Hornet, 221 Fireball, and 218 Bee.

The 6 1/2 SR seem to work fine in the 40 S&W.

I use the 6 1/2 primers in small pistol loads, and in. 221 Fireball. If you use them in. 223 you will get pierced primers.
