Ammo at inflated prices. Are you buying it?

After making my rounds through lucky gunner, AIM, J&G, etc. the only ammo I can find is at pretty inflated prices (as in 5.56 at $1.00/rd for M855 bullet and such).

My question is - who's buying it? I'm not currently in a location that allows me to shoot as much as I did, but the last time I bought 100 rounds of 5.56 I paid $0.70 per round, and that was my limit. Have you had a necessity to buy it at these prices? I'm hoping that these ammo prices are not the new norm.

My local shops have avoided price gouging, however every shipment of 9mm/.223 goes out as soon as it comes in.
This week I took a road trip to the next town (Freemont) and they had everything in stock, at highway robbery prices. A box of Winchester .22's that should sell for less than $20 was priced at $100! A box of large pistol primers, same rip off price.
The guy at the counter asked me if I wanted anything, I just looked at him, shook my head in disgust and walked out the door.
I used to go target shooting every week, now I'm holding onto what I have and refuse to pay scalpers prices.

Paid $35 at a local shop for a box of 50 .45s, mostly because I was on the way to the range and needed them. But I think that's pretty steep, and won't be doing it again soon ... guess I need to camp out in the Walmart parking lot and be at the Sporting Goods counter when they open ...

Price gouging around here is only coming from private parties.

The shops learned during the last "shortage" that artificially inflating prices really angers and alienates customers.

I was at the Tampa gun show and people were charging .80-1.00 per round of .223/5.56.

The thing I couldn't believe is that people were lining up happy to pay those prices. Makes me wonder if there are just a bunch of first time buyers thinking those prices are normal.

I'm not buying anything right now. I pretty much stocked up before the last election, because I had a bad feeling about what was coming regardless of who won. My plan for this Spring is to shoot mostly .17 HMR, because there seems to be plenty of this round available in my area.

...and it's been like ten months. I miss my babies in CO (AR/AK) . Took a great job out here, but it's time to get back ASAP and fight the good fight.


Between all my guns (.380, .357,.45, 12ga, 7.62x54R, 5.56,7.62x39,.22). I have about 800 rounds, which for me is dangerously low. Being stuck out here, I'd be more than happy to get on a wait list for lower priced ammo and ship it to CO.

And I think my next purchase is going to be something like .243 Win or .257 Roberts that WILL be on the shelf

Maybe paided to much for 4 box's of 40sw 155gr +P , 50 rounds boxs for 35 dollars each. That high for me but people have been pay more for that for some time when you add up the stupid 20 or 25 rounds boxs cost.

It's crazy here the lgs here is making a killing on 9mm its going for 50$ for 50rds!! And it's flying out the door. 556 forget about it!

I've been lucky that every weekend for the last two months I have found something at a GS (.22LR or 9mm) but only 115gr 9mm and the .22LR has either been really high dollar stuff to begin with or its not good for my Semi auto Neos. But I bought it anyways cause I knew I would be getting a 22 rifle soon and this weekend one literary fell into my hands and I have ammo for it

The 9mm has been @ $20 a box of 50, I lucked out today, wasn't planning on buying any ammo but went to the LGS to check for parts for said 22 rifle and as I walked in my CCW course instructor was there picking up a batch of .22LR for his classes and we got to talking and the owner behind the counter said he was holding a box of 9mm for a customer but they were supposed to come in yesterday and the instructor told him to sell it to me. So I got it and 100 rd of .22lr all for -$20. I count myself lucky to be finding all this ammo and starting to really know the guys behind the counters. I usually start picking their brains about accessories and such (as long as they are not busy, usually I go right at opening) and bring up ammo as I am checking out from buying something else like a cleaning brush or holster etc. I time the owner told me he had some but was saving it for new buys. I said no problem I understand. The next Time I came in he offered me two boxes before I even had a chance to ask. I was set on buying a .22 rifle from him before this one fell in my lap. I may still as I have a feeling this one may be too old to shoot and be just an heirloom.

Nope, I have only been buying ammo at normal prices, I purchased 100 rounds of 45 last week for 40 bucks. 9mm for 12 bucks a box, and even some steel cased 223 for 6 bucks. I just keep my eyes out and just roll my eyes at the gougers.

I’m not buying a thing. I got lucky, and picked up 2000 rounds of 5.56 M855 and 3000 rounds of .22LR CCI Mini Mags just before this madness started. I have enough .22LR for the year, as for the 5.56, I’m not shooting that this year at all. I’ll sit on it until the insanity stops. I reload my handgun rounds, .223 and 7mm Mag so I’m not worried there, those I will keep shooting.

Nope, not buying. If enough shooters keep buying at the inflated prices then the shortage will continue. There is always someone out there that will figure out how to get their mitts on the regular priced stuff to hoard and resell. When they start getting stuck with their inventory then the prices will come down and the shelves start to fill up again.
This situation should also be a lesson for all of us to try to keep a bit more than we need on hand at all times. I don't mean to hoard to the point where you have a lifetime's worth but just enough so you aren't desperate when a shortage happens. If I recall, the previous run on ammo in 2009 caused a shortage that lasted several months. I remember thinking it would never end but soon enough it did.

There are plenty of people who waited to buy guns until they felt a ban was possible and are now scrambling to get ammo at any cost and many who already own firearms however have a poor supply of ammo. Many people in both cases are willing to pay higher costs. Those who are already well stocked rarely feel the need.

I've been buying as little as possible. I have plenty of ammo for my rifles. I happened to get into shooting pistols in November and just hadn't built a supply when this panic happened. I've been picking up 9mm and .40 for about $20-$25 a box for 50. I went to the gunshow this weekend and saw people askin $80 a brick for .22lr. I don't think they were selling any though. I carried 2 bricks with me in hopes of trading it for some .40 ammo but no one seemed interested in trading and I was willing to take 2 boxes of 50 of .40 or 9mm ammo for a brick of .22lr. They all seemed to think I was crazy, lol

I took a brick to a friend at the gun shop, got 2x 40 cal boxs. Good deal for the both of us, bricks where going for $60+ online and the shipping fees....

I got hit on 22s,
I just never foresaw that we would have a shortage on 22s, and talk about gouging on rimfire ammo right now,
I think I'll just rely on my tomahawk instead of paying $100+ brick

nope, not buying it. I went to Mills Fleet Farm the other night and they had a sign posted up limiting ammo purchases for customers - "due to hoarding and reselling of ammo on the internet at inflated prices." I'm glad they had the sense to try and curb the shortage and at least give everyone the opportunity to buy ammo when it becomes available.

I bought 100 rounds of WWB 9mm at the range for $31, because prior to buying my Hi-Power, I had no need for 9mm and had none on-hand.

I did buy three 325-round boxes of Federal Automatch .22lr at Wal-Mart, two for me and one for a friend, but they were priced pretty much normally at $15/box.
