That would make it 1976.

S&W 10-8, 4" Serial 6D318XX. From my digging I'm coming up with 1980 as year of manufacture. Can anyone confirm?

1980 would be correct. SN's ran from 6D10001 to 7D10000 that year.

Assuming you took that number from the underside of the grip frame (see pic) and there is no "J" prefix then it would date to 1953/54.
The gun was simply known as the Chiefs Special until S&W began stamping model numbers around 1957.

27J518 = 1971
J145682 = 1973/74
You can shoot 38+P in them but because they are aluminum frame it could accelerate wear and tear. Best bet is to limit +P's to defense use/testing and use standard 38's for general plinking.

Date Help

Just acquired a 38 with supposed ties to Al Capone and was wondering if the manufacture
date would support the claim. Serial # 3676xx. Any help appreciated.

Assuming this is a 38 Military & Police model (6 shot, 38 special, swing out cylinder) then the serial number dates it to early/mid 1920's.

Thanks Jim! Although I will never know for certain, that date makes the story at least possible. At any rate, it's a classic I will definitely enjoy!

S&W stamps the serial numbers when the frames are made but it could be awhile before those frames are assembled into guns. That and they are not assembled or shipped in order so there can be several months or more from the time a frame is serial numbered to when it's assembled and shipped.

What it all means is... those dates are not exact.

The N2xxxxx range ran from 1974 to 1977. As yours is at the end of the range it's likely 1977.

Another age request

Hello all,
I have a 3-1/2", Mod 27-2, # on the butt is S31xxxx. Best I can figure it was made in 59 or 60, does that sound correct.

Thanks
