45acp 230xtp power pistol

Hi all.i normally shoot cast bullets but i bought these 230 xtps to try out and am finding load info all over the place for 230grn jacketed bullets.cant find the hornady manual locally and really dont want to buy it for just one load.would have liked to buy the gold dot 230 as can get lots info on it but cant find hornady info on the 230 xtp with power pistol.what i need is min and max load info with the recomended aol.alliant shows the max loads on there gold dot and tmjrn .5 grn apart with different aols.I would like to know what hornady says on the xtp.Any help would be appriciated. Thanks GSPMAN

I do not have specific XTP data, but Lymans 48 has two similar loads with PP. The first is a 230gr FMJ with Min/Max as 6.4/7.2 grains, and a 225gr JHP with Min/Max at 6.5/7.3 gr of PP.

I'd start at 6.4 gr of PP and seat it to where it will fit in a Mag and see if it looks normal, perhaps seat it slightly deeper until it Looked right. That should give you a safe place to start developing a load with them.

My Sixth Edition Hornady Handbook lists the 230 grain 45 ACP including the 230 XTP with Power Pist:

5.6 700fps
6.1 750fps
6.6 800fps
7.1 850fps
7.6 900fps

Winchester WLP was primer they used in the data. A 5" Colt Gov't model was the pistol used.

You could load hardcast much hotter than fmj because there is less friction with hardcast. Try pulling a cast bullet and a fmj on a kinetic puller and you would know what I mean. Buffalo bore can attest to that as well.

thanks for the replies.I do want to load these warmer than my 200grn cast bullets.i think power pistol would do better on the top end of load data.these figures give me more confidence in loading between 6 and 7 grns to see if i like them.dont think i will shoot these that much at 24$ a box. not trying to make it a magnum but would like to get around 850fps with these.got bullseye unique hp38 hs6 powders also.tried hs6 with a plated 230rn berrys that had shot quite well but cases sooty so i knew they were to low pressure. thats why think power pistol will work better at top end.might load them with bullseye and unique also to compare results.thanks for your inputs.223 did your book show a aol with those figures.will seat to a proper depth for mag fit and feed as others have said but hornady spec would be nice.thanks again GSPMAN

Power pistol is my favorite powder for 45acp jacketed loads. I have loaded the 230gr XTP over 7.3gr of Power Pistol. Definately a load with a punch. I believe thats just under max, but its as hot as I would care for.

I am reloading 230 gr FMJ in 45 ACP using Power Pistol. All loads have a COL of 1.275".

IDPA requires a power floor of 165,000 (bullet weight X average FPS) for CDP class.

Reloading with 6.4 gr of PP I achieved an average of 768 fps (PF= 176,640)
Reloading with 6.8 gr of PP I achieved an average of 821 fps (PF= 188,945)
Reloading with 7.2 gr of PP I achieved an average of 855 fps (PF= 199,203)

I used CCI LP primers. Gun used was a Dan Wesson Heritage 5" 1911.

I will be reloading at 6.4 gr of PP.

Remember, with a heavy bullet (230 gr) you do not need to load a particlarly hot load in order to get so impressive power factor numbers.

Thanks for the replies.I actually went to the range yesterday and shot 5 of each at 6.5 and 6.8 grns power pistol and they seemed very hot compared to the castloads i was shooting.so i came away not knowing what going to do.Thanks for the velocity #s.they seemed to be going faster than figures you gave because recoil was quite significant. My purpose for this load was to have a good load to have when i carry it out in woods with me.considering these and some 200grn trun cone bullets.loaded the tc 200 over 6grn unique that shot good yesterday.power pistol sure brings out the performance but been finding data on loads all over the place.thanks for info again as gets me in a safe load area that i can get the performance and not be hard on my gun next to check out the accuracy of the loads.side note at the range was a older guy that was shooting his 1911 @ a target at 100yds and was doing pretty good.yeh i thought that was great.GSPMAN

I don't have my data with me, but the Hornady 7th edition manual loads for 230gr with Power Pistol are WAY hot with the HP-XTPs. I got up to 1100fps or so during a load workup, and it sent the brass into orbit.

I really like Power Pistol, but I load it to about 850-900 FPS, and I think that I get that with 6.8 grains, which is supposedly way below max.

I'm basing this off memory and a spreadsheet where I calculate costs, I'm about 1000 miles away from my notebook, and since I'm getting numbers way off of the manual, you should check your loads with a chrony, especially if they "feel" hot.

Power Pistol always feel hot.Its the nature of that powder.I've loaded a dozen different powders in the 45 and at the same velocities,Power Pistol always was stiffer,so I quit shooting it.It does do a good job for accuracy though, same as Longshot(another brutal recoil powder). I do like it in 9mm jacketed.
