22-250 Rem seating depth

Trying to figure out seating depth. How far off the lands do you seat on a 22-250 rem?

I am using a Sinclair seating depth guide and comparator.

Lapua brass length 1.902
Hndy Zmax 55gn full length including tip .811 Ogive .337
Measurement on the guide is 1.636

So adding full lenght bullet .811 and guide 1.636 =2.447 for touching the lands?

At what point is the .337 ogive important?

Also using the Zmax with cannelure, the cannelure is about .04 above the brass neck.

What am I doing wrong?

Nothing !

Seat each style bullet 0.015" off the lands.
This resultant length will vary with style of bullet used.
This only applies if you only load single round.

IF using the magazine, load OAL per manual to ensure proper function.

You're not doing anything wrong except thinking that there is an actual, exact answer to your question.

First, you have to realize that the shoulder of the comparator case is probably not the same as the shoulder of your cases. What the comparator is measuring is the distance from the shoulder of the case to the ogive when it touches the rifling. THAT is the distance you need to load your rounds. Shoulder to ogive, not OAL.

Second, there is no magic number for distance to the rifling for any bullet or all bullets. Some combos like to be touching the rifling, some like some jump.

Third, the location of the cannelure is immaterial unless you intend to crimp, which you don't need to do except POSSIBLY for a semi-auto.

I seat some 20 thou off the lands. But if you copy me you would only be loading for my rifle, you would do much better to learn what your rig prefers.
