Just got my February 2001 Midway catalogue, and I was looking through the brass section for a future order. I knew Winchester recently tooled up to make a batch of 8mm Mauser, but ohmigosh! $48.99 for 20 pieces, and $210.99 for 100! That makes it the most expensive Winchester brass in the catalogue, even beating 7mm STW by $4 per 20 pieces. Now, in perspective, one could buy a goodly amount of Winchester, Remington, Federal, or Sellier & Bellot factory loads, shoot them once and save the brass, or even resize and trim .30-06 brass before one got to the dollar figure they're charging for the new Winchester brass. I hope it wasn't a misprint...

8mm brass

I have a topic running in LoadYourOwn.com about this subject, beside forming the brass from 30.06 someone suggested necking up 7x57 mauser as a better alternative.

Gee, and I thought that $2.00 each for my .22 Waldog brass was bad...

Remedy: Go buy yourself a crate of Wolf 7.62x39. That'll toss away those reloading blues!
Or go here and buy 8x57mm Mauser brass from remington:
http://www.tntreloading.com/cgi-bin/...ass.html?E+tnt

Does $23.65 per 100ct sound a little better????

"I hope it wasn't a misprint..."

Don't you mean you hope it was a misprint? And I think it was. Looking at their online site and searching on "winchester brass 8mm", I found Winchester 8mm Mauser brass at $41.99 for 100, or $189.99 for 500. That's a little more in line with what it should be although still on the high side.

Yup, that's what I meant, I hoped it was a misprint.

When I read the same prices on their online Adobe Acrobat catalog, I thought it wasn't. But when I went through the product browsing menu, then I saw the cheaper prices mentioned by Mal H. Whew!

I thought this was going to be a post on Russian ammo. I really WON'T consider buying NEW brass from Catalogs because to me its really a rip off. I don't blow threw huge amounts of 30/06 brass and If I ever find 20-30rds at a range once a year I'm set for most of the year with that caliber. The only reason I would buy .223 brass is if I ever get sick of reaming out the Primer Crimps on the Military brass I find at Ranges. I think picking up brass at the range is the only way you really beat factory prices EXCEPT for the Russian stuff.

Heehee, SodaPop, that indeed is another subject worthy of the topic line. I'm totally guilty, my Bulgarian SLR-95 has NEVER seen anything other than my own 7.62x39 handloads. Pretty scary, huh? That's what my Dillons are for, though. Same goes for all my other centerfire rifles and handguns, even if I have to make the brass for them.

What are you guys talking about when you mean making Brass? Yes Gewehr that is very scary that you reload 7.62x39! I only own 3 sets of reloading dies and one of them is the 7.62x39 round Prett scary Huh? I have never bought a box that had brass cases to date so I never really reloaded it much. I have in total probable never reloaded more than 25rds for the 7.62x39. I have heard some stories of people getting 2 or 3 inch groups with SKS rifles. I've never really done better than about 6 inches with Iron sights. Do you reload .311 or .308 rounds for your SLR-95? I never see bullets other than the 123gr so I never got into it.

Don't feel bad. I've had my SAR-1 for over a year, and the dies for probably 9 mo. They haven't seen a reloaded round yet!

try reloading .32 ACP for your KT P-32.

you can buy a case of the FN surplus ammo for $71.

It would cost you a got $100 + because you'll need to buy the cases.

that's one round I'll gladly buy factory.

SodaPop, I load .310 or .311 123gr FMJ bullets for my SLR-95, typically Winchester or Hornady. On top of basically the ONLY powder for the 7.62x39, Accurate Arms 1680 (It's a Czech-made powder specifically produced for that cartridge)

I've got a target on my website that shows a 1.04" group at 50 yards from the Bulgarian rifle, but I went all-out, even weight-sorting and moly-coating the bullets, Federal 210 Match primers, etc. Not a benchrester's idea of a group, or even MOA, but not bad for a Warsaw Pact chunk of steel.

I don't actually "make" brass, I should rephrase that. I "convert" the brass into something I can feed my obsolete guns with. For example, 6.5x54 Mannlicher-Schonauer into 7.62x45 Czech M52, .303 British into 6.5x53R Dutch Mannlicher, 7x64 Brenneke into 6.5-06, .30-30 Winchester into 7mm Rimmed International, and before Starline came out with it, .223 Remington into 7.62x25 Tokarev.
