How exactly do you slug a bore?

I have a 7.62x39 carbine and iam getting rather average accuracy out of it.
I have a hunch that the barrel might actually be .308 and not .311 so I wanna find out as i think this might be the answer to my accuracy woes.
So how exactly do you do it and also can it cause any damage to the rifle?
