Reduced load 300 Wby Magnum?

I have found a great deal on a Win Mod 70 in 300 Wby Mag. I was looking for something in 270Win, 270 WSM, 30-06 or 300WSM but I'm really attracted to the deal factor on this one.

Have any of you done reduced 300 Wby mag loads (something like a 150gr bullet at 2,900fps) for lighter recoil? If so, how do the loads perform in accuracy and recoil?

I hunt mostly whitetail and black bear but plan to hunt elk and/or moose with this rifle at some point. Your thoughts?

I load for the .300 WBY mag using 150 gr Hornady SST bullet with H-4831 powder. The recoil is lighter then I expected, when I worked the load up I was pleasently surprized.

Hodgdon Powder has done a lot of study about reduced loads in rifle cartridges. They recommend using H4895 for that kind of stuff. Unlike a lot of other powders, you can take H4895 and reduce it a lot, I mean a WHOLE LOT and it will still be safe. You can take their max load and subtract about 35% of the powder charge and it will reduce the velocity by about 25% for example. More or less, that is, but the point is they say it's perfectly safe to do so. They recommend that you don't go under about 60% of the published max loads though for H4895.

There might be other powders that you can reduce significantly below the starting loads too. This is just the first one I saw published by a powder company.

IMR 4198 is a favorite for reduced loads. Both the IMR and Hodgdon 4198 and 4895 can be used safely with reduced loads.

Just my opinion but I wouldn't go to the trouble or expense developing "reduced" loads for your Weatherby. If you want to tame the recoil slightly just use recommended "START" to mid-range reloading data using recommended in the manual powders such as Hodgdon or IMR 4831. Velocities with those powders at the Start charges would put you in the 2900-3000 fps range. You've got a hunting rifle there and not a plinking rifle anyway so let it romp. Consider a recoil pad for your shoulder while testing at the range. You won't feel the recoil with a deer or elk in your sights but very many rounds off the bench will get your attention. Want a light kicking rifle get a .260 Rem or such. Careful reloading the belted cases. If you full length size pushing the shoulder back all the way you'll only get 3-4 loadings before your cases have stretched just in front of the belt and case separation is a possibility. Treat the belted cases just like loading for say a 30-06 and push the shoulder back only enough for positive chambering.

Go to Hodgdon site-check on DATA and then youth loads from the popups that appear.

I believe they are very adament ONLY H 4895--any published load may be reduced to 60 per cent-that is anypublished load but ONLY H 4895.

Check em out.
