Need tips for accurate loading of 357 Sig - Page 2

You'd normally taper crimp when you headspace a round on the case mouth.
You'd roll crimp a cannelure or when the bullet headspaces on the neck or the rim.
357SIG really headspaces on both. And most rounds available for it don't have the cannelure, so I kinda question why it would be roll crimped as well.

Same reason, I suppose, that RCBS .400 Cor-Bon dies also roll-crimp. I can't speak for the philosophy of the guys at RCBS; was just passing along information.

Some of us, btw, own cannelure tools and do, in fact, cannelure bullets that we use for bottleneck handgun ammo.

When .357 Sig was first developed, somebody put out the erroneous information that it headspaced on the case mouth. It headspaces on the shoulder, like other bottlenecks. Of course, if the shoulder's set back too far, it'll headspace on the case mouth. When you're setting up your sizing die, you're setting it up to bump the shoulder.

So, rivers, do you candle the setup cases?
Or do you take the barrel out and check for the proper fit?
Mine seem to fit ok, the primers always seem to show a good solid strike.
I set mine up per directions, not even thinking about the 'bump the shoulder' method I use on rifles.
I wonder if I should candle 'em.
What do you think?

Not necessary. Just make sure the case head is flush with the barrel hood.

What 918 said; I don't candle anything. I do use a Wilson case gage for setting up some of my bottleneck sizing dies. With handguns, I just eyeball the case to make sure it's either flush or just a tad below flush with the rear of the barrel hood.
