Elementary School Beginning Toy Gun Turn-In Program

There trying to prevent these kids from growing up like my Dad.

His toy gun collection as a kid was out of this world. He was also the eldest boy and spoiled. When one of his neighborhood buddies dinged up his new Tommy gun, his mom replaced it a day later. I doubt he would have been convinced to get him to trade them in, though.

Hell, it apparenty took them a year or so to get him to trade in his cowboy outfit, holsters and matching pair of sixguns. His mommy washed it every night so he could wear it to kindergarten.

That little girl looks like she's a simmering crockpot of rage. She was probably normal before she had access to toy guns and the symbols of American imperialism. No doubt she grew up to be a homicidal...

Really, this initiative is a ploy for publicity. If he's not wasting tax dollars on it, it's harmless. If he is, then there should be pressure from the community.

The school principal "believes" and "claims" that children become desensitized to gun violence when allowed to play with toy guns. He cites no peer reviewed research leading to his decision. However, the research is out and available stating that children who play with toy guns and violent video games do not become violent as adults as a result of playing with such toys.

Years ago similar studies were conducted regarding cartoons depicting such actions as Elmer Fudd shooting Bugs Bunny or Wiley Coyote falling off a tall cliff while trying to do in the Roadrunner with an anvil. No conclusive link was discovered between watching violent cartoons as a child and violent behavior patterns as an adult.

This principal is merely one of the myriad educators, and others, that act on a "feel good" basis in lieu of understanding actual resultant behavior.

The funny thing is, Elmer Keith agreed with him. Keith grew up shooting from an early age, and his parents wanted him to understand the gravity of firearms from the beginning. There were loaded, accessible guns all over the Keith household, and the idea was that he'd never mistake a gun for a toy.

I'd say they were successful. Now, if that's what the principal wants, I'll be glad to donate a couple of rifles to whatever marksmanship program he has in mind.

You mean if I let my grandkids play with these like I did as a child they will become bloodthirsty killers just like their grandpa, oh what, hold on, I don't seem to fit that description. I think somebody logical thinking is a bit confused here.(And it is not mine)

It's nuts. Kids are taught the evils of guns and violence, but allowed to play blood-spattered video games for hours, and sit next to daddy when he watches "Walking Dead" every week.

ive been called a nut before, but what i see kids becoming "desensitized" to is turning in their guns, and this is what i find deeply troubling. Endoctrindation is what it is.

The kids in 5th or 6th grade might turn in old toy guns for condoms or beer, but not many will do it for an old book.

The 5th graders could beat up the 3rd graders, take their toy guns, and turn them in for that "condoms and beer".

Books. What a silly concept to use that as a reward. Imagine the fun of xmas morning. Waking up all excited, running down stairs, getting out that heavy present from grandma...opening it to find...a book.

Do they still even make books?

My two nextdoor neighbors, younger brother and I used to always play Army when we were kids, running around every weekend shooting and killing each other.

Now 10-15 years latter I am the only one who owns a firearm and none of the us has killed anyone.

Not only is it a waste of time and will do absolutely nothing to stop gun violence, it's also another step to make young boys less of boys, and become less of men.

Can they turn in Pop Tarts that are bitten into gun shapes and drawings of guns so they have a better chance at the bicycle raffle?

All the imaginary bad guys have to feel very relieved to know the school is looking out for them.
