Favorite .357 6" revolver? - Page 2

I own two 6" .357's...the first is a Security Six and the second is a S&W M27. The 6" M27 is just a work of art with its crisp, light trigger and wonderful accuracy. The only downside is that its so damn pretty it only goes out to the range a few times per year when the weather is sunny and nice

The Six on the other hand is a workhorse. If its rainy or snowy, I bring the ruger to the range. Its trigger is not as good as the S&W's but it is still very serviceable. The ruger gets the job done for ~1/3 the cost of the M27!

My first-ever .357M - bought new on 'closeout' 9/03 from the Waco, TX closeout dealer for a song - a 6" 66-6 that I put a HiViz, Ahrends square conversion fg-style cocobolo grips, and Wolff springs on before I ever shot it. Easy pointer for such a long barrel. Great for my .38's and wimpy .357 Magnums, I never needed 'real' Magnums as I had a .454 SRH at the time when I needed to shoot with 'emphasis'.

The 6" 66 is a great 'pointer' - love the partial lug - the wood is perfect for my level ammo. The next year would see S&W produce a 5" h-l 686+ as a 'Stocking Dealer Exclusive', which I had to have - it came with the same sight and grips I had put on my 6" 66!. It's seven-shooter status made it more favored for quite a while - it, too, is a great 'pointer'. Acquiring a LNIB 5" JM PC627 V-Comp 8-shooter put the 5" 686+ h-l back in the safe. Then, two years ago, it lost it's favored status to a 4" 627 Pro - the top of the heap, as far as I am concerned.

There is something about a 10/64/66 - the HKS #10 speedloaders - some plinker 125gr JHP .38's. I think I will take my 2" 10, 4" 64, and 6" 66 - along with some .38s - to the range next time... they are just fun.

PS Those are Remingthon R38S12 +P 158gr LHPSWCs in the speedloader. I keep defensive ammo in speedloaders or moonclips ready for all of my revolvers... 'just in case'.

I originally bought a 6" 686 but swapped it a 4". I like the balance better. As an added plus, the 4" probably had a trigger job done on it by Novaks. Talk about sweet!

I have a Security Six snubbie. I like it too. Both are good solid guns with good triggers although they are very different triggers.

27s are great, but cost more, and all you really get is a nicer finish and sights. OK, the target trigger and hammer, too.

I've got three 6" model 28-2s, my main one has the target hammer and trigger. The others are "backups".

The model 28 (27too) will handle loads that you have to beat the cases out of a model 19 (or a Ruger or Colt). Locks up like a bank vault. I can shoot 125gr jhp at over 1600fps from my 28, with just a tiny bit of sticky extraction. Can't do that with a smaller, lighter gun. And the weight helps a lot with the recoil, too. The only real drawbacks are the size and weight, not easily concealed (but then, it was never meant to be), and a lot to pack on you if you wear a gun all day.

All in all, my favorite DA revolver, and best in 6", where you get most of the full magnum performance, and better handling (and holstering) than the 8 3/8" versions.

I've owned 19, 66, Security-Six, 27, and 28. I still own the 28. The 28 was a six and now it's a four with Wiegand sights.

686 is the best .357 magnum that is currently manufactured and within reasonable price and accessibility range on the market right now.

Accuracy, ergonomics, trigger, durability, quality. It has it all.

Not to mention with the right ammo a 6 inch .357 is a very formidable round, surpassing the 10mm in performance. Thats why I love it so much.

I'm even giving thought to start carrying my 4" 686. Like you say, hit's hard to beat the ballistics, or the reliability.

That's tough. I always liked my M686, then I traded it for a Python. The Python is smooth and accurate, but I am afraid to wear it out. Can't afford to replace it.

My M27 is smooth, accurate, and hardly recoils.

Guess that is my favorite to shoot.

Well, as for a 6"er I love my 686. I prefer the extra weight the full length under lug provides. I bought it used and the finish was great, the trigger job on it breaks like glass and I added a set of Kim Ahrends Maple Tactical Square butt Finger Groove grips. Shes a fine shooter. As far as versatility goes though, I love carrying my 4" GP100. Last but not least my 2.25" S&W 60-9 .357 is my beloved pocket gun for when ever/where ever CCW.

I own or have owned every gun mentioned in this thread (except for that weird Rossi) in either 6" or 4". I shot my 6" Model 27 Smith today, and that gun has a superior trigger to my Python or any other gun. The Dan Wesson is incredibly accurate, the 586/686 are state-of-art, etc.
HOWEVER, and, Lord, it pains me to say this, if I had to choose one gun in six inch, it would have to be (gulp!) my 1981 Ruger Security Six.

It does everything well, is light and easily carried, can be repaired cheaply and easily, and will last forever. I put on Hogue pau ferro grips which seem fitted to my hand, the stainless finish cleans easily, the trigger is excellent - and so on.

In short, my least expensive .357 magnum is also the best all-around 6" revolver.
Go figure.
