IPSC load for .45ACP and .40 S&W
Can anybody suggest a load for IPSC style shooting? I'll be getting a press (and reloading manual) in about two weeks and was just wondering if anyone had any loads worked up that function well for them. I'll be shooting a Wilson KZ45 in a .45 and a Glock 35 in .40.

For the 45 Hogdon Clays is the standard by which all other powders are judged. Pick a 230 grain bullet and load it to 1.250" or so, start at around 3.7 for jacketed and 3.5 for lead. Work up to 170 pf on the chrono and you are done. It is ALL I shoot for competition 45 loads, and has been for a LONG time. N310 is just as nice to shoot if you want the cache of the VV name and don't mind paying twice as much for the powder......
Minor or major in the 40? Minor goes to Clays again, pick a good 180 grain jacketed bullet and start around 3.2 grains. For major loads in a Glock N320 is about as good as you will find, but it can be a pain to find as well as expensive. LOTS of guys use TiteGroup, I tried it and do not like it at all. Power Pistol is nice if you shoot outdoors, it is pretty flashy for indoor matches. Universal is a good shooting powder, but spikes REALLY badly if you get bullet setback or an overcharge. Unique is a good shooter, Super Field and 4756 too. |

disagreement time
230g RN (can be lead -Penn Bullets, plated -Rainier, or jacketed -Winchester, Remington, IMI), sized case (I prefer new IMI, but any name-brand case is good), CCI300, OAL 1.250--1.265" based on your gun.
Powder? Well, you got your all-time standard 4.8--5.0g Bullseye, 5.2g W231 (I use 5.0g W231 in my personal IPSC / 1911 ammo, with it never chronographing below 724fps), and then you have the rest. The "rest" include (in order of my personal preference/experience/feedback/opinion/just because): HP38 (Hodgdon's W231) AA5 WST Nitro 100 (without question, the softest recoil 'feel') 700X AA2 Imp N320 Unique HS6 Red Dot ---------------------------------------------------------------- For 'standard'-length normal-gun 40 I most highly recommend: Rainier 180g TCJ-FP, CCI500, sized case (and ensure sufficient case neck tension; toss any suspect case), OAL 1.130"+/-.005", 6.0g Power Pistol. Might creep UNDER 'Major' (again, based on your specific gun), so you can (with chronograph) increase that safely to 6.3g (Alliant lists 6.9g as MAX). This load has been tested in over one hundred Glocks. ---------------------------------------------------------------- Nutshell: 230g LRN, CCI300, 5.1g W231, OAL 1.255". 180g TCJ-FP, CCI500, 6.0g Power Pistol, OAL 1.130". Yeah. A33102
