case length

Hello
When is a case to short. My 30-06 info says that 2.494 is the max length of the casing. As a rule of thumb, when is the case too short?
Thanks

General rule of thumb for rifle cases is to trim 0.010" less than listed maximum case length.

I have trimmed some long necked cases shorter by mistake by 0.025 and fired them without problem. Trimming them to much on short necked cases presents a problem with potential misalignment of the bullet if the neck is less than 1 bullet diameter in length.

Straight wall semi-auto pistol cases never need trimming, as they get shorter with each reload. Cases for wheel guns may be uniform trimmed so the same crimp can be placed on each cartrid
