Sears, Wards, Western Auto etc
Of these rebadged shotguns what are the "best".....especially pump guns? As a kid I'd spend hours daydreaming over the Sears/Wards catalogues and standing mesmerized in front of the Western Auto guncase! 50 years later I'm going to pickup a couple and would appreciate any guidance!

I bought a Sears 20-ga pump about 43 years ago. Made by High Standard? It had a plain (no-rib) fixed barrel with an adjustable choke and the thin stock may have once been a fence board. I didn't keep it very long, but I remember, it was quite a task to dis/re-assemble for cleaning. If you're getting a vintage entry level shotgun with the intention of shooting, may I suggest you try for one with a detachable barrel, if at all possible. I wouldn't wish that old fixed-barrel Sears on my worst enemy.

The first shotgun I ever bought was a Sears 12ga. single shot made by Savage. If I recall I bought it around 1976. I had just moved out of my parents house and needed a shotgun. I still have it and will keep it until my grandson can start shooting. I also have a 12 ga Ranger auto that I got from my grandfather. It's a humpback Browning clone that was made by Savage also and I think was marketed by Sears. It has an excellent finish and checkering and the quality is above any entry level autoloader you will find today. IMHO the store brands offer exellent value for the money and you can still pick them up for a good price. The onlyn down side is most of them appear to have been working guns and show it.

When I was 18, I bought a Sears marketed Ted Williams Model 300 auto for $80 used at a local gun shop. Now almost 20 years later, that gun has shot literally thousands of light target to high-brass duck loads and NEVER failed to function!

I have a Western Auto .410 pump shotgun that I think was made by Mossberg that I bought back in the mid-seventies. It has a very nicely polished blued finish and works great.

I have a Ted Williams 12 ga semi auto shotgun. It is the prettiest shotgun I own, the wood is just beautiful. Never had a problem with the function but I lost the front sight once.

Winchester made a lot of Sears guns as did Mossberg and Savage among others. Western Field, Monkey Wards and Revelation were mostly Savage and Mossberg.

I have a Western Field 550, which is the Mossberg 500. Excellent shotgun, regardless of whose name is on it.
