I went to Menard's. Picked up their 3/4" solid pine boards and screwed it to my 3/4" plywood top. Pine may be soft to use as a top, but there's a remedy...

In the paint section they have what's called "Pour-On". This stuff is THE BEST! It's a two-part epoxy resin that you mix and pour on the top. It self levels and dries to a very hard, think, clear coat. It brought out the grain in the pine. It's about the equivalent to a bar-top finish but better. The beauty of this stuff is it's impervious to most chemicals. Also, if you happen to chip it, a small amount of touch-up will fill it like a windshield repair guy does with windows.

My desk top is a work desk so I just make sure it is functional. I stain the wood then apply 7 coats of polyurethane. So far it has not found any type fo oil etc that ruins to coating. It is easy to clean and even if it takes a beating it is easy to re-coat.
