7.62 NATO recipes

I posted this question re milsurp brass with no response, so I will try a different angle. Some resources I have say to be especially careful about reloading this round because of its thicker wall as compared to commercial brass. I am aware of the rule of thumb about backing off 2-3 grains from the max loads in the manuals, but I would like some tried and true recipes using military brass as my starting point for reloading this caliber. Will be shooting the M1A rifle. 147, 168 and 175 grain fmjbt. Thanks

FWIW, Speer no. 13 has starred several recipes as being ideal for gas-operated semis. I'm not near my book so I can't post 'em for ya.

loading 7.62 NATO BRASS

Can't help you with recipies for gas operated autos, but I load a batch of brass for my Savage 99 in .308. I find I can't come within 5 grains of the loads listed in several manuals for .308 Win. The case just won't hold enough powder using WW760 or BLC-2. The case capacities ARE very different from WW brass.

Here is a link to a FREE Download that I use.

You have to have Adobe Acrobat Reader installed (it is Trusted program), because it is in the .pdf format.

When loading for 7.62 using Military Brass .... always start at MINIMUM charge and work up .2 grains until you get your best groups. It's also best to say .2 grains below MAX when using 7.62 brass.

Hope that helps.

I've been shooting the M14/M1As in matchs for over 30 years. I've tried about everything and keep coming back to the old standby, that being 41.5 Grns of 4895, pushing both the 168 & 175 SMKs. It also works good with the 173 Mil. pulled bullets used in the M118 Match.

Its pretty much the same load that the Army used in the orginal M118 Match.

Give it a try, I think you'll like it.

Also Check out the Hornady Reloading manual, they have a section decated to loading the M14/M1A.

I load lots and lots and lots of 7.62 with 147 gr FMJBT and my favorite recipe is Remington primers, 43.5 gr IMR4895 or RG4895 (pulldown powder) and I haven't had a problem with that yet. I shoot in an M1A NM and also in a 1919A4 BMG and both just eat this stuff up. I haven't loaded the heavier bullets yet.
