What to do with a carcass...

Here in southern WI, the coyote population has skyrocketed in the last several years from virtually nil to a nuisance.

(I've heard the Waukesha County Park System issued a warning recently that small dogs should not be brought into the parks, because coyotes may eat them, even on leashes. And, some friends lost 2 cats to coyotes over the summer)

So, I've heard about varmint calling/hunting and I'm intruiged by it. I want to start hunting Coyote this year, but I have one question: What do I do with a dead coyote?

I know what to do with deer, squirrel, various birds, etc, but what about dogs?

I've never heard of people eating them (in this coutnry, anyway), so all I can think of is to skin it and sell the hide.. I've heard this is only worth a few bucks, though.

I'm going to hunt fox too, so my parents have furs to train NAVHDA dogs with.

Well, browse the archives for "how to" do calling and all that. Also, http://www.varminter.com has a bunch of info.

Skinning out a coyote for salable pelt is a bit specialized. Varminter.com has several trappers who can tell you some how-to stuff, there.

As for the carcass, I just cut off the tail for a "trophy", and leave the rest for recycling. It will definitely be eaten by something--and surprisingly quickly.

Skinning them for the fur and having it tanned is pretty cool. The skull makes a neat wall hanger.

As for the carcass, a quick burial would work if you don't want to feed the vultures.

As Art says, stuff will not rot (much)..

Most fur buyers in the Vernon Co area would pay the same for an unskined yote as one not skinned the way they want.

Back in the 70s I would take the dead coyote to a fur dealer and he would skin them for half of the money. It wasn't much but my half would usually buy a box of shells.Anymore most farmers in my area want you to kill every coyote you see.They blame them for loosing baby calves sometimes and I think I have lost a few to them also.I usually just leave them lay anymore since the Hides don't bring much in our area.
