Do you have to use barrel rosin?

When taking off a barrel in the barrel vise do you have to use barrel rosin? Or is there anything else that works, like baby powder, or talc. If I order the rosin from midway with shipping it puts me at $22.00. I would rather use something cheaper if possible. Thank you.

A sporting goods store should carry rosin as used by baseball pitchers. The question is is it the same or close enough stuff?

A properly fitted set of vise jaws and a proper barrel vise shouldn't need rosin.

The reason barrels turn in the set up is because either the jaw inserts don't fit correctly or the barrel vise just doesn't have the gripping power needed.

Before attempting barrel removal, use a solvent like lacquer thinner or alcohol to thoroughly clean the barrel and the inside of whatever type of barrel jaws you're using to remove all lube and any dirt or grit.

If the jaws don't fit correctly or are improper types to start with, or the barrel vise just isn't up to it, no rosin or other treatment will really help.

Talc or baby powder are unsuitable.

I have never used rosin ... I made my barrel wrench, though, and it has inserts in 0.050" steps ... I use aluminum foil to adjust the fit a little better than that and it always works like a charm.

Rosin is available at music stores. It's used on violin bows.
