Handloads database suggest starting around 5.5 gr and working up. I'm using Win 231 with 185 gr LSWC, but I have not shot them yet. |

Good powder choice, but I don't load either of those bullets so no suggestions other than consult your loading data manual.

Still looking for suitable loading data
I should have said in my orginal post that I have consulted several current loading manuals and several websites, including Hodgdon and Handloads.com. Both of these bullets are relatively new and I'm finding the manuals and powder company manuals are not staying up to date on new bullets.

I was told by the folks at Xtreme Bullets to use Speer's data for jacketed bullets with their plated bullets, although just about any bullet company's data should work. I have the One Book/One Caliber pamphlets for all of the cartridges I reload (in addition to several full manuals, which are indispensable) so I can easily compare from manufacturer to manufacturer to come up with reasonable starting points when loading plated bullets. None of their data is seriously different from the next and all the starting points are safe from one bullet of the same weight to the next. The 45 Auto is a forgiving round so compare a few loading manuals' data with W231 and 185 grain bullets. OAL is going to be mostly a matter of what will chamber and feed into your gun reliably. I would start with the recommended OAL of a similar profile bullet in Hornady, Sierra or Speer's manual. If you can, chrono your loads as you work up. This will tell you if you start to stray into dangerous territory, although if you just stay below everyone's max loads you should be just fine and have some good target and plinking loads. Good luck.

My personal experience with Win 231 and Berry's 185 HBRN:
5.7 grains is my "steel" load: the lightest load that will reliably cycle the action. It has very little recoil. 6.8 grains puts me right at 900 fps in a 5" barrel, which makes major power factor. This load is considerably louder and has more recoil and flash. Primers are starting to flatten. This would be a max load, approach it with caution. Now that I have used up the 185's, I'm going to use 230's to make major. The 185's are best for light loads. Regards, -Dan |

WIN 231 Load for Berrys 185 gr HBRN Results
Went to the range today with some Berrys plated .45 ACP 185 gr HBRN loads. Results were 1.5" group @ 30ft in a 5" 1911 with 16# spring.
Here's the load data: Bullet: .45 ACP, Berrys 185 gr plated HBRN, .451 dia. Primer: Winchester large pistol Case: Mixed Powder: WIN 231, 5.8 gr OAL: 1.244" No failure to feed. Recoil was moderate as compared to Blazer 230 gr FMJ.

Sounds like you've found a good 'plinking' load. Congrats. Now go shoot a few hundred a week!
