New Traditions Vortex
Just picked up a new Vortex with the 30 inch barrel. Tried 4 different bullets today , but couldn't get consistency with 2 pellets of Triple 777 (100 grains).
Anyone have a pet load for their Vortex they would like to share? Also, do you have better luck with loose Triple 777 instead of the pellets? Look forward to everyone's responses. thanks, Texas TB |

You may have better results with Pyrodex or real black powder. I stopped using Triple 7 yrs ago and don't have as maney problems with grouping shots. I don't care how clean it is. JMOP

Some folks are getting great accuracy loading the Vortek with Blackhorn 209 powder, and also with the Harvester 260 grain Scorpion Gold PT bullets.
The Blackhorn 209 powder does require regular smokeless powder solvent to clean but doesn't require swabbing between shots, although some people do anyway. 777 pellets aren't going to be the best powder for every gun. Other pellets to try are the White Hots pellets which are very similar. But you'd be better off using the Blackhorn 209, or to try Pyrodex pellets or a loose powder. Trying out the Blackhorn 209 powder is probably the most important 1st step. 1. http://www.huntingnet.com/forum/blac...ge-report.html 2. http://www.huntingnet.com/forum/blac...-surprise.html 3. http://www.huntingnet.com/forum/blac...rnady-fpb.html 4. http://www.huntingnet.com/forum/blac...-ldr-time.html 5. (see user review #3) http://www.cabelas.com/product/Tradi...fle/706934.uts The cheapest way to get Blackhorn 209 is to call Ed's Gun Shop and ask for Carlos. Including delivery, his price may actually be less expensive than the average retail price, but the minimum order is 2 containers. http://www.edsgunshop.com/ Here's where to buy Scorpion Gold PT Bullets in bulk packs of 50 & bulk Harvester sabots: http://www.harvestermuzzleloading.com/ http://www.harvestermuzzleloading.co...chk=1&Itemid=3 Here's where to buy bulk MMP sabots: http://www.mmpsabots.com/ Last edited by arcticap; August 20, 2012 at 06:48 AM. |

If you are going to use 777, try the loose powder. I started with pellets, don't use em anymore. Accuracy, ignition and clean up are all much better with the loose than with the pellets. 777 is all I've ever really used, so I'm only speaking to that brand of powder. I have come across a LGS that has 209 for $35 a pound. Going to be trying that this fall. Powder choices are limited here, and some companies refuse to ship even round balls to Mass, never mind powder. So I've been limited in my experience.
