Boneheaded Move
I own a fair number of High Standard "Riot 12" shotguns.
I recently bought a "20-6" model for $50. It's in absolutely pristine (possibly unfired) shape... save for the hack-job someone did on the top 3 inches of the barrel. I ordered a K120 barrel from Numrich.. will have to see if it works to restore this fine shotgun. |

Holy crap!
What were they attempting to do to it? It looks like they took a grinder to it at 3 points and ground holes into the bottom of the barrel. Some kind of bassackward muzzle brake?

What the heck? Reverse ported barrel?
Maybe they were holding the gun really light and trying to make it do back-flips.:barf:

No idea
I have no idea what they were doing. They "machined" three grooves as you can see... completely through the barrel. They also ground the front sight off, although it doesn't show in the pics.
There's no serial number on it, so it has to be pre-1968 manufacture. I wonder where it's been sitting all those years. There's a thin coating of thick grease on the bolt and other parts, so it's totally rust free. Save for the barrel, all it needs is a hang tag to pass for brand new. Quite a mystery. |

I suppose for a 200.00 tax stamp you could have cut it off at around 14" or so and been done with the monstrosity on the end. But wait, no serial number, could you even do that with a pre 1968 gun? I'm so out of the whole NFA thing I have no idea.

My guess is they were putting the handguard/bayonette lug from a Model 12, 97, 502 or 37 on it.

Man, that really hurts to see. I'd agree with Slopemeno- some gunbutcher was trying to put a trench gun heat shield and bayonet mount on it, I'd bet.
Glad you were able to find another barrel for it, those are some fine shotguns. Please let me know where you're finding them- even termite infested- for $50 8^). I only have one, but would like to get it some company! 8^) lpl |

You might be "money-ahead' to part that one out and buy a complete gun.

It just goes to show: Stupidity, alcohol and/or drugs and home gunsmithing are a poor combination.

Replacement Barrel Arrived
I ordered a NOS barrel from Numrich Arms. It arrived yesterday.
I'd guess it's been sitting on a shelf somewhere for 30 plus years. When I got the grease and grime off, I found a pretty decent barrel. No factory markings at all... which sorta bothers me, but on the other hand, it is nicely fit and finished. My existing barrel is a front bead only, while the replacement is drilled, tapped and cut for rifled sights. Anyway.. it will be an improvement... cost of barrel - $77.10 |

Once you get it installed, I hope you'll post a picture of the gun in its new trim. That'll help make up for the first pic a little...

Homemade barrel porting I guess. What a guy to do that to a beautiful gun like that. But on the other hand 50 bucks for a nice looking gun great deal and steal. Thats just funny to look at to.

So, you wound up with a really nice gun for 127.10 + shipping and a few bucks for a rear sight. Not bad at all.
