Hello to all and 9mm powders
Hello to all, new member here. I just purchased some reloading equipment, and had just a general question. What seems to be the powder of preference for a 9mm luger round?
Hope to learn a lot here. Thanks! |

I really like Bullseye in 9mm, and I load them pretty hot. WSF is really good for upper-end loads, (I may switch to that cuz I have a lot of it) and at the very top end there's AA#7 and Power Pistol. All of these measure very easily.
If you want something light and easy-to-shoot, try Alliant Promo or Red Dot. Large flakes that are hard to measure consistently, but that doesn't seem to matter, they are accurate anyway -- and cheap. What kind of bullets do you plan to use?

I shoot 124 fmj RN, 124gr. Speer Gold Dots, RP 124 Golden Sabers, all loaded with Unique powder and CCI 500 primers. Unique shoots fine in a few 9MM pistols and a carbine rifle.

I've been using W231 (HP-38 is the same thing) for mild 9 mm range loads. They seem to work for that purpose. At least here it is an easy to find these powders. Pistol Powder works well but you get a lot of flash and it is for faster moving rounds. Ball powders seem to measure well in most powder measures. Going with a forgiving powder to start with probably makes the most sense.

W231/HP38, Bullseye, Unique. I use Bullseye for plated and HP38 for lead mostly.

I use Titegroup in my CZ with 124 grain bullets.
Working on some HS-6 loads for my SR9 and 115 grain bullets. so far it looks very good. |

Your powder choice is influenced by what you want to accomplish. Do you want to shoot 9mm major (at very fast velocities in a gun made for it), or do you want something comparable to factory loads, or do you want something softer shooting? The weight in grains of your bullet will also influence what powder you choose, as well as the case volume that is left over after you seat your particular bullet. You'll have to supply more information as to what your intentions are.

Titegroup is great for all around use, I use it for low to moderate loads. Can get dirty if you don't load it stout enough. Powerpistol will be great for moderate to upper level loads. With PP, once you start getting to the upper-level loads you'll notice more muzzle flip. Its normal.
I started loading the 9 two years ago, and this is just my two cents. |

I've used Bullseye, 231/HP-38, titegroup, power pistol, universal clays but I always seem to come back to Unique for most of my non-magnum pistols. It's very versatile and you can load it mild to wild, for lead (watch the speed for lead) or jacketed bullets. I haven't experienced any issues metering Unique as some have, so if I were to choose one powder to get going reloading...Unique.

1: W231
2: Titegroup If it uses a magazine I find that W231 is overall best. It meters very consistently and has good accuracy. What I like most with 231 is that some cases after firing look like they could be loaded again, its that clean. Titegroup is one of the most accurate powders I have used so far with a 9mm Carbine but as another member put it, it has to be loaded on the upper end of the scale or its like shooting black powder (ok that might be a little extreme). My only other complaint is that it’s a little harder to accurately meter with the powder measures that I own. Unique is another good choice but I am so taken with 231 I haven’t purchased any in years. Welcome to the addiction |

I use 231 and Unique also. I can't seem to find that one of these works any better than the other although the 231 meters better.

I've had outstanding results with Hodgdon Universal. My "go-to" 9mm load is based on Hodgdon Universal.
That said, I've had good results with Titegroup and Win231, but Universal is my hands-down favorite. |

I've been using W231 almost exclusively these days because it's convenient and it works in so many of my other pistol loads.

I've dabbled with Blue Dot, Titegroup, Bullseye, AA#7, Power Pistol and even some old defunct Winchester powder that most folks don't have anymore... any of them will work.
But once I started using Universal, I quit experimenting with others in 9mm. I use Universal under a 125gr cast LRN (Dardas out of Essexville, Mich) and also a 124gr Berry's plated. I buy Universal in 8-pound jugs now.

I started using IMR Hi Skor 800 but I was getting misfeeds even at max load. Switched to Unique, no problems since so that is what I use, shoot 124 gr ball for practice. I shot the Hi Skor thru a chrony and it was running nearly 200 fps below what the charts estimated. The Unique is performing as advertised.

IMR SR 7625 is my favorite for the 9.
Good load density, medium speed, meters like water and always top notch accuracy. |
