Necking up 22-250 to 250 savage

Hi guys, I have a heap of once fired 22-250 brass that I would like to neck up to 250-3000

I recently bought an FN Mauser in 250-3000 in perfect condition.

Is it a simply process of lube and run through a 250 savage full length sizer then load and shoot?

I would first try opening the 22-250 neck up on one case with the expander ball of a 22 die. Then I would run a 244 expander ball in the neck to further open it up, followed by the 250 expander ball. Lubing the inside of the neck is important in each step. If that works, I would use that procedure for all cases. Not sure if going from 22 to 25 directly is doable.
You cases necks will be thin after expanding them from 22 to 25 no matter what route you take, and this means that a die with bushings will be required to use the cases after necking them up. A regular 250 die will not size the necks down far enough to hold a bullet because the die is made for SAAMI spec case necks.

I agree with Martyn4802. While the process you are thinking of will work fine, it will not yield the best quality cases. I would recommend just buying new 250 Savage cases rather than try to make them from something else.

A lot fewer frustrations in the long run.

And congratulations on a great rifle and rifle chambering! The FN commercial M98 is a great rifle, and 250 Savage/250-3000 Savage is a great round.

I'd try fireforming a few first to see if that works.

That's not a big jump in neck size.

10 grains of Red Dot or Unique and a wad of toilet tissue should do it nicely.

Everyone else makes good points, but my opinion differs.

As long as you have a tapered expander and a case trimmer, I don't see the problem with necking them up to .257".

Even if you don't have a tapered expander, I don't see the problem. I have gone .053" bigger with button expanders. You only need to go .033". Starting with an intermediate size expander, like .243", might be a good idea. But... probably isn't necessary.

Granted they wont be match quality cases, but they'll do just fine for many shooters.

I've formed 8mm-06 from .280 Brass; .358 Win from .243 and .308 brass; .35 Whelen from .280 and '06 brass; 7.7x58 from .280 brass; and 6mm Hornet and .270 REN from .22 Hornet brass. ( I don't advise the .243 to .358, but it worked. )
The only one that showed low neck tension was the .270 REN. The brass was just too thin to start with. (.009" to start. .007" after)

Try 5-10 cases and watch the case length. Forming to 250-3000 requires pushing the shoulder back on the .22-250 case. Use plenty of lube on the inside of the neck, and a small amount on the case body. Push the shoulder back in small steps until you get the feel for it, and the right amount of lube. Lube dents while forming usually destroy the case. I have used RCBS lube in the past, but only use Imperial Sizing Wax for case forming now.
