I am looking for a bear-but manily whitetail rifle, close to long range

thinking of a model 700 or model 70 in 7mm Rem Mag, i dont like the new rifles from wither co. so it will be used

any opinions

im trading a g30 in and i will get 400-450 for it so the rifle can be around 500-600 bucks

Just my opinion, but I'd opt for a 700 in either .270 or .308 at the most. That's plenty for black bear. The 7mm mag is great for elk, moose, etc., but gets a little uncomfortable to shoot after, oh... say one round.

By the way. I shot an H&K MP5SD last year. Sweet. Really sweet!

I think you are wise to go with the 7mag. I've hunted Mn.whitetails for 20 years with mine, no complaints. My new fav is my tikka ss/syn in of course 7mag. It has a better action, trigger and feel than my old remy. I will be taking it out west in a week for pronghorn/mulies so you could say I don't feel it's too much gun. I took it to Ak. last year for caribou and hope to chase elk with it someday soon. I think the 7 mag is a great all-around caliber.

IMO the 30.06 is your best bet. Very versatile and accurate. Bullet grains range from 110 to 230 give or take. You can hunt Varmints or Elk or Bear and everything in between. Remmy 700 or a Winny 70 are nice rifles. Don't forget to look at the Savage 110-112's. Awsome rifles, altho' not much to look at. Save some $$ for a good versatile and variable scope. Good Luck!!

Def go with the 30-06, and the Savage as mentioned above. I have one in 7mm that I won in a raffle, and it's a sweeet shooting gun, can't beat it for the value in price, just wish it had been a .30-06. Many reasons, one being how easy it is to find exactly the ammo you want, and how you can buy surplus ammo at really cheap prices...

If its going to be used mainly for whitetail at moderate ranges, I would go with a 270 or 308. If it's going to be anything further, I would go with the 7mm. More punch at longer ranges. I have a 270 in a Winchester model 70 featherweight and have made many of shots out to about 250 yards without a problem on whitetail and mule deer under 250 lbs. Depending on what kind of bears you may go after, you may want to just go with the 7mm just to be on the safe side. You shouldn't be too over powered with that for whitetail. I've never owned a 700, but I here there good. The model 70 I have has always been an excellent gun. I don't believe there going to be much of a difference in terms of quality. I would go to your local gun shot and try both and see which on fits you better.

It is funny that I just posted something similar to this.
I got R-1 in 30-06 for the reason.
I have used Rem 700 in 270. I like it but I wanted auto loader and heavier calibur rifle. I don't know if this helps you.

Can't go wrong with either a Model 70 or Remmy 700 in 7mm Mag. The Remington has an easier trigger to adjust, but the Winchester has a 3 position safety.

140's in 7mm don't recoil much (less than the usual 30-06 loads) and the 160-175gr are plenty for Black bears.

But I did own a lite weight mountain gun in 30-06 it hurt the arm bone big time. Get a good recoil pad and it is not that bad.
When shooting most people hold the rifle in tight and it accentuates the kick, you should be holding with the trigger hand and pushing away with the other hand towards the rifle sling but not to close to the sling, it bites.
That will help keep it down to a dull roar.

Good luck, Belted mags are the way to go, the bigger and more powerful cartridges all have them. Better head spacing etc.

The 308 is plenty . You know for all that extra powder the mags take
you really don't get that much around 200fps and shorter barrel life

I second the 308 for black bear. Perfectly amble with good bullets such as a Barnes X or Failsafe. For that matter, so is the .270. Both are obviously superb whitetail rounds.

I'm taking my .308 out in 2 weeks for black bear in eastern AZ. I don't have any concerns about the cartridge doing the job.

Yeah, I would definitely go with 7mm Rem Mag. That's what I have. I shoot a stock Weatherby Vangaurd and it doesn't really wallop me all that bad. It think that it is a good all-purpose cartridge for bear and deer.
