wanting to reload for garand
I know that many threads for this already exist, but I am asking more about the whole aspect of loading rifle rounds. I have been reloading for about 3 years with a lee loader in 30-06 and in the past 6 months or so have been reloading 38 special and 9mm. But getting a garand recently I want to start reloading for it in order to afford to shoot it. I'm wondering what sort of dies you guys use. I intend to load on a lee classic cast turret press.
Also what case lubes do you guys recommend? I am totally new to this aspect of reloading. Any good places to purchase cheap 30 cal fmj's in bulk. And finally any more of your pet loads for garands you guys feel like sharing. I purchased IMR 4064 is that fast enough? If not I can buy another type. Thanks for any help that you can offer. |

IMR 4064 or IMR 4895 are good choices for the M1. I would pick up a set of Lee 30-06 dies with a Full Length sizing die like Lee RGB dies. I like Redding's Imperial Sizing Die wax or RCBS Case Lube 2 on a pad.

IMR 4064 and 4895 are two of the quintessential powders for the Garand. This first choice is a very good starting point.
FMJ bullet source: Weideners is a good first stop. |

RCBS FL dies, IMR-4895, RCBS lube pad with RCBS lube.
47.0gr of IMR-4895 with 150gr FMJ bullets, Remington cases and CCI 200 LR primers.

I bought 1K of 173gr FMJBT bullets from Wideners. I've used 4064 under that bullet in my Garand without issue (from the ammo anyways, sometimes the spent clip won't eject, but that seems to be a rifle issue).
If you are going to use 147 or 150gr bullets then 4064 will still work, but I haven't loaded any rounds with those bullets. Jimro

For cases, I troll the gun shows and can usually find mil surp once fired brass at a reasonable price. The only down side is they have the crimped primer. Just get a tool to take the crimp off and you are good to go.
For case lube I swear by Mink Oil. It's exactly like a imperial Wax but you can buy it at the grocery store where they sell the shoe polish and laces. Comes in a can just like shoe polish. |

Viciouskitty, my personal load for my Garands are:
48.5 grs 4064 powder, 150 or 165 gr bullets, CCI 200 LR primers and Remington cases. For powder I go to http://www.gibrass.com/ and buy the Russian 4895-4064 powder. It is a great powder and an eight pound jug costs 120 USD vs 145 usd at Powder valley for IMR-4064 For bullets I buy Nosler seconds at http://shootersproshop.com/index.php...ry&path=71_101 Right now they do not have any CC target 30 caliber bullets for sale, but when they do you need to stock up on 155 or 168 gr target bullets. For brass I go to my local shooting range during the run up to deer season here in Texas, and get my once fired 3006 brass cheap or for free. 2000 rounds of brass was my last haul. (Last two weeks of October) Have fun |
