An Ugly girl that kisses good..

Well, the other day I picked up a 1999 dated steel framed ASM 1861 navy imported by CVA, for next to nothing.
It was beat up, the barrel was rusted to the arbor, it cocked, and rotated, but that was about it.

The seller said it had been in his safe for years, he took it out, saw it was rusted, and took it to a local gun shop, they got it freed up, and suggested he sell it..

They apparently, didn’t know much about them, just enough to make it work.

Well, after a lot of penetrating oil and some wood popsicle sticks under the loading lever, the barrel came off.
The nipples were stuck, but finally got them freed.
Internally, it is not rusted, and worked.

I should have passed on it, but since it was steel framed I just had to get it as I have another .36 caliber ASM 1851 brass frame I could swap parts on if need be..

It has everything going against it,
The barrel face is not cut square to the cylinder
It is off by .0165 of an inch left to right.

The cylinder shows marks where the local gun shop put the cylinder in a vice or vice grips and rotated the action to get the cylinder to rotate free on the arbor.
And the cylinder has a buggered chamber thanks to the local gun shops attempt to free up the gun.

the inside of the barrel is slightly pitted.
And the timing was somewhat off.
I fixed the timing issue, and decided to see how it shot.

All that being said, she is a shooter!!!
6 shots, 25 yds off hand.

The other guys were shooting their muzzle loading rifles at 50 yards.
I tried one of their targets (a bowling pin) to my surprise, it fell over, I took aim at a second one, and it too fell over. (I quit while I was ahead)

I fired off 48 rounds (8 cylinders)
Using 25gr pyrodex RS (I don’t have any P or 3f at the moment)
Covered by a home made felt wad lubed with bore butter mixed with beeswax and olive oil. And a .375 round ball.

The only issue was a few cap jams from the caps sticking to the hammer.

I was going to Square off the barrel, and a few other things, but after shooting this, I am not going to change a thing.

Oh, I shot some high speed to see if the bad gap would shoot more gas out to the left than the right, but it seem to be about equal.
(It is being fired ghetto style to get a top down view of the gas pattern)

As one of my shooting buddies said today, she is like an ugly girl that kisses good.
She may look a little rough, but man does she shoot.

Congrats on your find! I'd leave it alone as well . . . and great shooting by the way! The old girl does a good job.

I have one of these that I bought from a guy who had put a collection together many years ago but he'd never shot it. It is a really beautiful revolver with nice wood and a great fit and finish. I know some ASMs were "iffy" but the one I have stacks up with the best of 'em.

I want the frame lol for my cva imported navy....everythings good on my gun but being a brasser bugs me haha for my first BP gun I just cant get over it being brass. ive own many cartridge revolvers and the concept of brass as a frame scares me ehhh call me crazy!

Oh thebser, Don't worry about the brassers I have owned several, just keep it mild.

This is only the second steel framed colt design I have owned.all the others were and are brass.
And still have a cva brass frame kit gun(1851 navy in .36 by asm) that is un finished.

Run an ad on your local Facebook trader pages looking for black powder guns. People will come out of the woodwork..

I traded this girl for a box of pmu.40 caliber ammo I paid $13 for.
I bought a Cva mountain rifle for $20 (the old first model stamped made in USA with a 4 screw German silver patch box and a 1 in 66 barrel
I have been offered a steel frame pietta 1860 army .44 with flask, balls and capper for $100 (I am going to look at it tomorrow).

My ad was essentially
"I have some money burning a hole in my pocket looking for black powder guns, I prefer no inlines"

And they start lining up...
In the last 3 months, 4 revolvers, 2 rifles and counting..

NateKirk, no I don't normally gangsta shoot, I hold it normally.

I did it that way for 6 shots to catch the left/right gas/smoke pattern from the barrel cylinder gap on high speed video.

Black powder,,..

It's an addiction...

Great deal you got on the "ugly girl". As good as she shoots, I wouldn't mess with the cylinder gap either.

On another note, How would I find the "local Facebook trader pages" that you mentioned? I'm on facebook and a member of a couple of firearm buy, sell and trade facebook sites, (one of which is ONLY for broken guns), but they aren't "local facebook trader pages". Can you explain how we find facebook "local facebook trader pages" that are local to where we live? I'd like to put up that same "want to buy" ad you did in my locale on facebook.

free market firearms (over 3000 members)

try surrounding counties too.

or put in gun trader in your search criteria.

ask other people on the trader sites you are already on. they may know of others.

or you can start your own group. just advertise it on facebook and every email you send out.

let me know how it goes.
