Underwood Ammo feedback

During the past several months I have purchased quite a bit of this ammo in 9mm, 357 sig, 45 and 10mm, mostly the hot stuff. Anyone thats shot this ammo care to chime in. Wondering about 1. Any over pressure signs. 2. What pistol or pistols you are using. 3. How do you have the gun setup, springs etc.. 4. just overall quality of the ammo. Thanks

I've shot some of the 180gr TMJ 10mm in my Glock 20. Stock setup on the gun. I was actually getting random slide locks with other ammo, none with the Underwood. Can't imagine how this would be ammo related, but just noted it didn't happen with the Underwood. Ran 100%, and pretty clean. It's definitely stout at 1300fps rated, but it's NOT hard to handle at all IMO in the G20. I didn't see any overpressure signs, no smilies in brass or pushed primers. Very high value at $27/box.

What gen is your glock 20 ? I've heard the later models have increased chamber support but I don't know which gen got the upgrade.

I run their 357 sig in my Glock 31C and 27/33. No pressure signs at all.

Did you pickup any of those 125gr gold dots in FMJ ?

I've had Underwood ammo and still have a little lying around. Quality is very good for sure. There is one thing however that I always point out when I can. I disassembled some of their 10mm rounds (180gr and 155gr Gold Dot) and they use 800x powder. I weighed the charge for each and found both of them to be definitely over "book max" listed by Hodgdon.

What this tells me is, likely Underwoods (10mm at least) is somewhat overpressure. So much so as to be a huge concern? Well he feels safe selling them to the general public so my guess is no they're not so wildly overpressure to be a concern, but they are overpressure.

I have shot and chronied some of there 9mm 124+Pgr and 40sw 155gr+P . The 40 run as advertised in a 4" barrel kahr . The 9mm in a short barrel pistol or not as faster as some other brands I shoot out of 3" and 3 1/2" barrels. But in a 4 1/2" barrel its atleast as fast as advertised.

Got to remember many loads have had there saami specs lowered over time. The 357rem mag is one of the best examplies of having there saami spec and velocities lowered to a lesser level. We have got'n use to the junk produced today that has been detuned from there designed max. That is including the loading manuals. They have to be safe in firearms of lesser quality too.

Some smaller ammo companies just load closer to a cartidges saami limits used today and still load other cartidges to the older standards for those that have firearms design for them as with a 357 "ruger only " loads. Can't say that about the big companies. More about how many rounds they can produce at a lesser or safer power level and do it safely. Atleast try to and we know how that works out sometimes. Some of the +P ammo out there is also a advertising ploy like with the 40sw"+P".

Even some of the 800x loading info has been cut from todays manuals compared to a few years back. Now loads are safer?? And slower

^^^ and much better than years ago thanks to better bullet design that requires less powder.

I for one don't think small guys know better than the bullet makers like Speer (owned by ATK, maker of rockets).

I've shot some of Underwood's 180 gr. TMJ and 180 gr. Speer hollow points, from a Dan Wesson PM-7 (1911). I haven't noticed any over pressure signs.

Keep in mind that the reloading manuals probably take into consideration that there are some 10mm guns without a ramped barrel. Underwood warns their loads should not be used in these pistols (like the Colt Delta Elite).

To date, I have only shot some of his 10mm loads in 135gr nosler, 155 and 165gr gold dot and some of his 125gr 357 sig gold dots. Have been checking all the brass, No overpressure signs on any so far. I will say this, His latest 357 sig load 125gr gold dot. rated at 1475fps feels very stout. Shooting that load from a M&P 357 sig 5 inch Storm lake bbl.
