need to identify shotgun
My buddy has a 12 gauge shotgun and when he bought it he was told it was a Remington 870 but we have no idea cause we are beginners and the only markings on the receiver say [ sportsman 12 pump magnum ] please if someone knows there stuff help.

Sounds like an 870 sportsman model... pre-express lower cost than wingmaster I think.
No other stampings? not on barrel either? Brent |

Better to post a photo of it.
That way the people around will be able to tell you possibly for sure. You can edit the photo too cover the serial of the gun if you need to do so. |

Some years ago, Remington made a series of "budget model" rifles and shotguns under the "Sportsman" name.
These were simply the standard rifle or shotgun with a lesser grade blue job and usually hardwood stocks. The Sportsman pump gun was the Remington 870 in the budget version. The gun is nothing more than a standard 870 and all accessories, parts, and barrels will fit. When Remington brought out the Express line, they discontinued the Sportsman. |
