CDT6XXX = between Nov 1999 and Jan. 2000.
S&W currently uses a alpha, numeric serial number system which they started transitioning in at AAA0000 in 1980.

J177xxx
That would fall between 1973-74. S/n range was J100000-J250000.

Very old S&W .38 question

Hello,

I have an old S&W .38 Ser. Num. 658xxx
and as best I can read it...
38(G or 6) &W Special CTG.

My father says my grandfather had it when he was a boy in the 1940's.

Can anyone tell me it's DOB, anything interesting about it, and its approximate value?

Thank you very much,
NutsWoC

You have a .38 Military and Police Model of 1905 - 4th Change, also sometimes called the .38 Hand Ejector M&P, or just the .38 M&P. It was made between 1915 (SN 241704) and 1942 (SN 700000), but obviously your SN places it more toward the end of the range, so likely late 30s, early 40s.

This gun was one of the earliest models built on the mid-size or "K" frame, which came to be the workhorse of the S&W line for police work or personal defense. With some modifications, it eventually became the Model 10, the basic .38 Special 6-shot fixed-sight revolver.

S&W made a lot of these, so prices aren't high except for perfect specimens. In good condition, somewhere around $300 or so - excellent condition, maybe double that.

Oh, that character you can't quite make out on the barrel should be an "S" (as in "S&W"), and the CTG just simply stands for "cartridge."

Serial numbers ran from 295000 in 1962 to 786544 in 1969.
Though not rated for +P, it's all steel so a limited amount of it is fine.

Need a little more info. 5 shot or 6? Is caliber 38 S&W or 38 S&W SPL. (special)? Are there any letter prefixes with that serial number?

.38 Military & Police Model of 1905, 4th Change. Serial number puts it early 1940's.

SCSW describes them as (unspecified) internal modifications, with some external modifications that barely rise to the level of what would be "dash" variations today. For example, slight reshaping of the cylinder stop cut, adding the two little pins to the star extractor mechanism, moving the logo, etc.

Hey everybody, I came across this thread when doing a Google search for my dads gun, so I'd figure I might as well sign up and ask this question. My dad has had this gun for about 50 years now, but we both are not sure about the age and what it actually is (he got it when when he was 16, so there's no box or documentation around here).

It's a 6 round S&W .38 Special model 14-2, with SN being K660XXX, it's also a CTG with a 4in barrel.
