Marlin 795 ammunition

I'm a little new to firearms and hunting, and have been wondering if I have been using the right cartridge for my Marlin 795. I have gone hunting a few times using Winchester 555 hollow point cartridges, but I have been wondering if it's the best quality and most accurate ammunition for hunting. Especially for my Marlin 795, I understand that different guns/rifles like different cartridges. I also know that I could just try different ones and come up with my own answer to this issue, but a little help narrowing things down would be very much appreciated.

My 795 likes the 555 best for bulk. When hunting I use CCI Minimag and Stingers.

This is awesome.

Thanks a lot guys. Right now any tip or suggestion is great help. I might have to go get a couple packs of Remington, Federal, and CCI and put a lot of each through my Marlin. No point in not enjoying testing this. Thanks again guys.

I have had two 795s for over 10 years and both work well with the Winchester 333/555 and the Federal 550 bulk. They both work real good.

skip the Remington Golden ammo, while it is generally accurate (when it is loaded correctly),
it is without a doubt the least consistant ammo made for .22LR applications.

What does that mean?? Lots of problems...
Zero powder loads (squibs)
Short Powder loads
Double Powder Loads
Lack of Primer
Spotty Primer application
Improper crimp
Improper bullet size
Improper case length...
it BOGGLES the mind that the MFR who makes some of the best Centerfire ammo in the world makes some of the worst Rimfire to ever exist.

Suffice it to say that my personal belief is that they use not only factory seconds in the Remington rimfire bulk packs,
they probably throw in the stuff nobody in their right mind would use as well...

I'm also as OCD as Monk when it comes to ammo...and have been known to Micrometer entire bricks...
not to mention pulling them apart, measuring the powder charge, examining the primer...etc...etc...etc...
Hey, it is a Journey of Exploration!! lol...yeah, my Wifey doesn't buy that excuse either...

P.S. No, the Vipers aren't worth a dang either.

Oh, which reminds me...the Good Stuff is a pretty wide group...anything by CCI or Blazer, Centurion, Eley, Federal, Winchester...
Just make sure it is High Velocity! Which is what the Blowback Marlin Action is designed for.

Standard Velocity and CB Caps will NOT usually cycle the action...but if you don't mind manually cycling, the Standard & Match ammo are great for precision.
Wolf Match...can sometimes cycle, but usually after you've put a few bricks of HV through a 795 to get it loosened up.
Wolf is almost as dirty as Remmy ammo, so clean the action often...

Hyper Velocity...just don't use it in a 795 or a 60...it beats the stuffings out of the Buffer...
which means eventually little plastic shards start jamming the action way before their usual 25-yr lifespan ends...
they also tend to drop into the trigger guard, which makes the trigger suddenly get REALLY hard to pull...

And you can Pimp the 795 quite easily!!

What are you hunting with a .22lr...- squirrels, rabbits, small game birds?....

Because anything that size ( If it's within 50 yards give or take some) that I mentioned above can pretty much be taken out with any style/type ammo from subsonics to HV, or round nose to hollow point.

If it's reliability and accuracy intended- I'd recommend Subsonic "SV" ammo from CCI. If its more power, and accuracy isn't too much concern, I recommend any HV from CCI, including the Velocitors.

Like I said though, - most rabbit/ fowl size game can be taken with most cheap bulk ammo.

Now if your gonna try for yote size game and you must use a .22lr, your best to stick with CCI Velocitors ( 40 grain rated at 1435 FPS ) and keep the max range under 75 yards to allow for a humane head shot only type scenario. I'd recommend atleast a .22WMR for any shots beyond.

A lot of good tips. Thanks.

I've just been hunting small game like squirrel, and rabbit. It's a great, and fun gun to shoot small game with. I just want to get the best out of what I've got, and I like a little challenge when it comes to hunting and fishing. My Marlin 795 gives me just that and then some. Haven't had the chance to try out new different cartridges yet, but I'm looking forward to trying some of the ones suggested. Any more tips would be greatly appreciated, even though I've been offered some great ones already. Thanks a lot guys/gals.

Wolf MT worked really well in my 795

I made Rifleman at an Appleseed with that ammo. I found I got tighter groups with it compared to other ammo in a quick and dirty test, but CCI round nose Minimags were just about as good. Never had a problem cycling the action with it.

Probably it was all variation in the shooter, anyway! The extra expense gave me a confidence boost. Now I'm happy with Blazer or Fed Bulk.
