Marlin Rifles - How are they?

I've got a chance to pick up a scoped Marlin .22LR rifle for a bit over a buck. And I was wondering what y'all's opinion is of these rifles. I've shot them before, in Boy Scouts when I was 10. And maybe when I was 11, but I don't remember what those were. It is a bolt action, and I was wondering if it'd be worth the money for a touch over $100.

I have one, cheap 150$ one, semi auto with 10rnd clip. out of the box it will give 3" groups at 100yards iron sights. Very pleased with mine and wouldn't hesitate to purchase another marlin model

For the money they are hard to beat. I've had 4 of them over the last 35 years and all were shooters.

They are a very good rifle and have only about half as many parts as the Winchester.
Also since Winchester has stopped making lever action rifles, parts for the Marlin will be easier to get.
The only problem with the Marlins is some of them get what is refered to as "The Dreaded Marlin Jam". When that happens, they have to be disassembled to remove the jamed cartridge.
Contact Scott at S&S Sporting @ 208-313-1570.
He has a very good fix for the jaming problem (I think it costs about $45.00) and if you have him do the jam fix, he will most likely order a new Marlin at a discount, fix the jam problem and ship the rifle to your FFL.
I don't know of any other Gunsmiths who know how to do the fix properly.

Best Regards, John K

I have a Marlin Model 60 that my dad bought me probably 15 years ago when I was a teenager. I believe he bought it used. I can't even guess how many rounds have been through it and it still shoots flawlessly.

Some people don't like the tube magazine, but I never really minded it. A great gun for the money I think.

Their bolt guns and lever guns are great. Stay away from the semi-autos (especially if the owner is asking more than about $60).

I had a Marlin 30-30 for quite a long time. Got it when I was 17 and sold it when I was 36. I put well over 2,000 rounds through that thing without too many issues. It was a lever action, two foot long rifle. Hard as hell to go through brush with that thing, but it never let me down either. I wouldn't hesitate to buy another one if it checks out good and healthy.
